Congrats to Apollo who officially went into diabetic remission yesterday, thanks to Dr Bec and the dedication of his owner. Although he doesn’t love his blood tests, he always loves the creamy treats that come along with it! ❀️

Did you know that many cats show signs of dental disease by the age of three?

Because cats rarely stop eating when their mouth is sore, dental problems can go unnoticed for months or even years. Bad breath, drooling, pawing at the mouth or subtle changes in behaviour are often early signs.

Untreated dental disease can lead to pain, infection and damage to other organs over time. A proper dental assessment allows us to identify inflammation, tooth resorption and plaque build-up before they become more serious.

Regular dental checks are one of the most overlooked parts of preventative care, but they can dramatically improve comfort and quality of life.

If you have noticed bad breath or it has been a while since your cat’s last dental check, book an appointment.

Weight gain in cats rarely happens overnight, it usually creeps up gradually. A few extra grams each month can turn into significant weight gain over time, especially for indoor cats with lower activity levels.

Excess weight increases the risk of arthritis, diabetes, urinary problems and reduced lifespan. Many owners do not realise their cat is overweight until mobility changes or health issues develop.

Regular weight checks and body condition scoring help identify small changes early. With simple adjustments to portion size, diet and enrichment, most cats can return to a healthier weight.

If you are unsure whether your cat is at an ideal weight, we are happy to assess and guide you.

Indoor cats are protected from traffic and fights, but they are still at risk of obesity, dental disease, arthritis, urinary issues and stress-related conditions. In fact, lifestyle-related problems are some of the most common issues we see in strictly indoor cats.

Regular health checks, weight monitoring and environmental enrichment all play a role in keeping indoor cats well. Prevention matters just as much for cats who never step outside.

If your indoor cat has not had a recent check-up, it may be time to book one. For more availability options, choose our Richmond clinic.

How do you know when to wait and when to act? If your cat is struggling to breathe, unable to urinate, has collapsed, is bleeding heavily or has been involved in trauma, that is an emergency and needs immediate veterinary attention.

Other signs that should not be ignored include repeated vomiting, sudden lethargy, seizures, severe pain, toxin exposure or a dramatic change in behaviour.

Cats often hide illness until they are very unwell. If something feels significantly different or alarming, it is always safer to call and ask. Early intervention can make a critical difference.

If you are unsure, contact us straight away and we can guide you on the next step.

A vet visit should feel like a conversation, not a transaction. There are important questions that can make a real difference to your cat’s long-term health. Is my cat at an ideal weight? Are their teeth healthy? Do they need blood pressure monitoring? What early signs should I watch for at home?

You should also feel comfortable asking about preventative care, diagnostic options and what changes are normal for your cat’s age.

An informed owner is one of the strongest protective factors in feline health. We encourage questions and take the time to explain recommendations clearly.

If it has been a while since you had a thorough discussion about your cat’s overall health plan, now is a good time to book.
