🌱 Hello Spring 🌱

We love seeing spring arrive at Gentle Home Goodbyes. 🤍

As the cold Melbourne days begin to ease, some of our elderly and arthritic patients may find their stiff joints feel a little easier to get moving — which can mean more time pottering around the garden, enjoying the sunshine and doing the little things they love. 🐾🌿

But as the weather gets warmer, it’s also important to keep an eye on our senior pets. Older animals, particularly those with heart or respiratory disease, reduced mobility or other chronic health conditions, may have more difficulty coping with the heat.

Watch for changes such as increased panting, tiring more quickly on walks, seeking cool areas, restlessness or simply not coping with activities as well as they normally would.

There are lots of little changes we can make to help our elderly pets stay comfortable, cool and enjoying their golden years as the seasons change.

Shai is doing so well on her C*D Oil and new management plan. Such a brave girl 🤍✨

Do you remember Shai?

She was rescued from a backyard breeder where she was beaten, starved and lived in constant fear. She was also locked away for weeks in a room without much food because the other dogs would attack her.

Shai is still processing the trauma but is getting better and stronger every day.
Her progress has been a bit of a zig zag with many trips to the vet for standard procedures like dental and desexing but she also has been allergic to some medication and in addition, she suffers from serious IBS.

It has landed her multiple times at the vet and ER where she had multiple p**p and blood tests done which revealed nothing.

Shai is enjoying C*D oil now to help manage her stress and anxiety and it is helping her tummy so much. She is living her best life thanks to her carer who never leaves her side and showers her with love and affection.

“How do I know if it is time?” 🤍

It’s one of the questions I’m asked most often as an end-of-life veterinarian, and unfortunately, there is rarely one perfect moment or unmistakable sign.

Your pet doesn’t have to be at their absolute worst for it to be the right time to consider a gentle home goodbye.

They may still recognise your voice.
Enjoy their favourite treat.
Rest in their favourite place.
Feel comforted by your touch.
And still have moments of happiness.

There can still be joy present, even when their quality of life is declining.

Having worked in emergency veterinary clinics, I also know that some emergencies simply cannot be predicted or prevented. Accidents happen and illnesses can change suddenly.

But when we do know that an elderly or unwell pet is declining, we don’t necessarily have to wait for a crisis to be the sign that tells us it’s time.

Sometimes planning a little earlier gives us the opportunity to say goodbye at home — somewhere they feel safe, surrounded by the people they love — rather than having circumstances make that decision for us.

One of the things I hear most often from families is:

“I’m scared I’m doing it too soon.” 🤍

It’s one of the hardest parts of loving an ageing or unwell pet. We want every possible day with them, and when they still have moments where they eat their favourite food, wag their tail, enjoy a cuddle or seem like their old selves, it can feel impossible to imagine saying goodbye.

But there doesn’t have to be nothing good left for it to be the right time.

As an end-of-life veterinarian, I often encourage families to look at the whole picture — not just one good moment or one difficult day, but how their pet is experiencing life overall.

Are they comfortable?
Are they able to rest?
Can they move around without significant difficulty?
Are they still engaging with the things they love?
Is their world becoming smaller?
And are the difficult days beginning to outweigh the good ones?

Sometimes a peaceful goodbye happens while there are still little pieces of joy left. While they can still enjoy a favourite treat, hear your voice and fall asleep somewhere they feel safe.

We don’t have to wait for their worst day to give them a beautiful last one. 🤍

🚨💙💛 URGENT: We need foster carers in Victoria — right now 💛💙🚨

RGRV is experiencing a surge in Golden Retrievers coming into care, and several of our regular foster carers are currently unavailable. Without more foster homes, we simply cannot say yes to dogs who desperately need us.

Could you open your home to a Goldie in need?

Every dog that comes to RGRV goes through a foster home first — for rest, rehabilitation, and a safe place to be themselves before finding their forever family. We don't have a shelter, so foster carers are the heart of everything we do.

Please read this bit carefully before you apply:

Many of our Goldies come from tough circumstances — puppy mills, neglect, or sudden upheaval in their family's life. Even the sweetest Golden Retriever can arrive anxious, confused, or unsettled, and it can take time for their true personality to come through. That might look like destructive chewing, house training accidents, separation anxiety, pulling washing off the line, or other behaviours you wouldn't expect from a "normal" Goldie. This isn't the dog being "bad" — it's trauma and adjustment, and it's completely normal.

We need foster carers who can:
🐾 Go in with realistic expectations, patience, and a sense of humour about the occasional chewed dog bed
🐾 Follow RGRV's health and behaviour instructions closely, and use positive reinforcement only — never physical punishment
🐾 Reach out to us straight away if something's going wrong, rather than waiting until it feels like a crisis — we're here to help you work through it, not just to take the dog back
🐾 Have time available to work on a foster dog's training and behaviour management, especially in those early settling-in weeks

What’s involved day to day:
🐾 Provide love, time, basic training and socialisation, and get your foster Goldie to vet appointments as needed
🐾 Treat them like one of the family — daily feeding, grooming, and a comfy, safe home environment
🐾 Welcome them inside the home — our foster Goldies are not outdoor-only dogs
🐾 You don't need to already own a dog to foster — some dogs actually do best as the only pet for a while

How long will they stay?
The length of time a Goldie is in foster care can range from around three weeks to several months, depending on the dog's needs, veterinary treatment, and readiness for adoption

What we ask of your home:
🐾 A securely fenced and enclosed yard (dogs must not be able to escape)
🐾 Any resident pets fully vaccinated, with certificates available if requested
🐾 No entire (non-desexed) dogs residing at the property while fostering — any resident dog must be calm, chilled, and desexed
🐾 Renters will need landlord/agent permission for a dog
🐾 You're comfortable with a short home check so we can make sure it's a safe fit

If I had a thousand versions of this life, I’d still choose you every time. 🤍

Our pets change us in ways we often don’t realise until they’re gone. They teach us patience, loyalty, laughter, resilience, and a love so pure that saying goodbye becomes one of the hardest things we’ll ever do.

At Gentle Home Goodbyes, we’re privileged to witness just how deep that bond is. Every family, every story, and every goodbye is different, but one thing remains the same—love.

Raphy is off to his new home today. ❤️

Today is one of those bittersweet days. Raphy is officially heading off to his new home, and while we'll miss him, this is exactly why Maremma Rescue Victoria exists. We wish Raphy and his new family every happiness together and can't wait to watch his next chapter unfold.

Thank you to everyone who followed his journey, shared his posts, enquired about him, applied to adopt, donated, and continues to support Maremma Rescue Victoria. Your support makes rescues like Raphy's possible.

If you applied for Raphy (or another dog) and didn't hear from us, please don't be discouraged. We close and delete applications once a dog has found their home, but that doesn't mean we aren't interested in you for a future dog.
