Grade 1 - plaque and calculus deposits on the teeth and mildly inflammed gums. This stage of dental disease is reversible with a professional scale & polish and adequate home care.
Grade 2 - plaque and calculus cover more than 1/3 of the teeth. This causes bacteria to accumulate at the gum line, resulting in red swollen gums. Bone loss and gingival recession may be present. At this stage, proper dental care is crucial to reverse the progression of dental disease.
Grade 3 - significant calculus build-up on the teeth as well as swollen, painful gums that bleed easily. The accumulation of bacteria causes damage to the gingiva and underlying scructures of the teeth. Proper dental treatment is needed to manage infection and pain and preserve healthy teeth.
Grade 4 - dental disease is severe and prompt treatment is needed. At this stage, there is extensive damage to the teeth and gums and extractions are most likely required. Bacteria from the mouth can spread to the rest of the body via the bloodstream, potentially causing harm to vital organs.
