🐄💙 A Tiny Patient With a BIG Fight!
On Tuesday, we had a very special little patient brought into our hospital. At just 2 weeks old, this tiny calf was extremely unwell.
She arrived hypothermic, lethargic, almost non-responsive and not doing well at all. Sadly, her mum had passed away a couple of days earlier from an unknown cause, leaving this little girl without her mum at a particularly vulnerable age.
We immediately placed a jugular IV catheter and started emergency fluid therapy to help support her circulation, along with antibiotics. She was then admitted to hospital for the day so our team could continue her fluid therapy and provide intensive nursing care - which of course our nursing team were more than happy to do!
Initially, she wasn't interested in feeding and had a very weak suckle reflex, but as the day went on, she slowly started to turn a corner. She became more alert and was able to get herself into a sternal position before going home. 💙
Her owners continued feeding her throughout the night, and on Wednesday she returned to us for another hospital day and continued nursing care.
And what a difference a day made! 🥰
By Wednesday, she was bright, alert and feeding well for Nurse Megan.
Today, we performed a recheck at home after her owners were concerned that she may have been scouring. Thankfully, this little fighter was bright, happy and very much feeling like herself.
In fact, when Nurse Megan arrived, she stood up and moved around, happily accepting the bottle that Megan offered her. 🍼🐄
From almost non-responsive on Tuesday to standing up and walking around just a couple of days later... we'll happily call that a win! 💙
Cases like this are a wonderful reminder of how important intensive nursing care, supportive treatment and dedicated owners can be, particularly when caring for very young and vulnerable animals.
