The versatile Friesian Warmblood comes in a variety of types so there is a horse to suit everyone. Have a look through our photos page to see our beautiful horses. They are at least 25% Friesian and crossed with any other breed. Because of the different breeding combinations their exterior appearance c

an vary from a finer type to a more solid type. The preferred characteristics are as follows:

Must have an athletic and agile appearance. Must have correct balanced conformation. Must be well covered. Must have good length of rein. There is no preference of colour and any colour is acceptable. The utmost priority is temperament. They must have a kind eye and be pleasant to handle. They will have a naturally full flowing tail. Their movement is not elaborate but they must travel straight. It is important to note that they are very late maturing horses both physically and mentally

AFWHS Registration Process

What happens once you have submitted your paperwork........

Your registration documents will be checked along with membership and payment verification details by our Secretary and Registrar.
• Provided the required information has been supplied your application is processed by the AFWHS Registrar.
Our registrar will update our database, and your Registration Card will be sent out in the post.
• There may be up to a 60-day turnaround for processing and return of paperwork. NOTE - If you require either Registered/Tracking or Express Post please clearly state this on your application form and contact the society as there are additional costs to cover this.

AFWHS Recognised Breeders List – 2026
As part of the societies mission to improve our communications and documentation for our members we have created a Recognised Breeders List.
To be included, and remain on the Recognised Breeders List, A Stud/ breeder must be current financial members including their Stud Prefix/Suffix Renewal. Members must have no outstanding monies or pending applications owing to AFWHS, and demonstrate:
• three years of continuous membership with the Society;
• and/or, three years of proven record keeping; and
• three referees from previous purchasers.

Breeders; who cannot demonstrate a 3 year history may be placed on the provisional Breeders list until these requirements are met
The AFWHS Inc Committee, reserves the right to approve, defer, decline, suspend or remove a Stud/Breeder from the Recognised Breeders List where the breeder does not meet the Society's requirements or where inclusion may represent an integrity or reputational risk to AFWHS.

AFWHS Registration Process

Completing the application - Below are the steps required for your application to be accepted

1. Complete all sections of the registration form.
2. Provide two preferred names for the horse.
3. Enter the horse’s identification details, including:
• microchip number.
• brand, if applicable.
• colour.
• markings.
• gender.
• date of birth.
• percentage Friesian – If you are unsure on how to work this out then you can leave it blank and the registrar will do it for you.
4. Provide the details of the sire and dam.
5. Provide the current owner’s details and AFWHS membership number.
6. Provide the breeder’s details.
7. Complete the identification diagram and written description of all markings, scars and whorls.
8. Attach/include the required photographs and Service Certificate.
9. Pay the applicable registration fee and include the required payment evidence.
10. Check the entire application carefully before signing and submitting it.

AFWHS Horse Registration Guide

Before applying
Before you submit your application make sure you have checked the following requirements:

• Current AFWHS membership – the owner must be a financial member at the time of registration. Breeders must have a current Stud Prefix/Suffix
• At least 25% proven Friesian bloodlines in the horse.
• Proof of breeding/parentage, including the required Service Certificate from the owner of the stallion that served the mare.
• The horse’s microchip number and/or brand details. The horse must be branded and/or microchipped before registration can be accepted.
• Correct details for the sire and dam.
• The horse’s date of birth, gender and colour.
• Two suitable name choices for the horse.
• Two clear photographs. One showing the horse from each side. Photographs should clearly show identifying markings.
• A complete description of the horse’s markings, scars and whorls.

The above details are required to complete our "Application for Registration' form which can be found on our website.

REGISTRATION PROCESS

As promised here is our second information post regarding the requirements to register a part bred Friesian with our society.
Below is a precheck list, these are the important requirements the society requires to provide registration.
Whilst the society will endeavour to assist any way we can to get your horse registered, unfortunately without the required proof of breeding or parental verification this often makes the registration process unable to be completed.

If you are purchasing a horse with the intention of registering it with the AFWHS, confirm that the horse meets the registration requirements and that all necessary breeding documentation is available before completing the purchase.
• Ask the breeder/seller if the horse will come with the Certificate of Service. This is required as part of the AFWHS registration application and it should be supplied by the owner of the stallion that served the mare.
• Do not assume that a verbal statement about the horse’s breeding will be sufficient.
• If the Service certificate or breeding documentation is missing, contact the AFWHS before purchasing the horse. This is particularly important where the breeder is no longer available or the breeding records are incomplete.
• Eligibility depends not only on the claimed breeding but also on being able to provide the information and documentation required by the Society.

Breeders
If you are not registering the horses you have bred yourself then please provide the purchaser with the Certificate of Service and any other relevant breeding documentation at the time of sale to ensure the horse is able to be correctly registered. If you wish to have your Stud Prefix included in the horses registered name you MUST be a financial member with a current stud prefix renewal.

The first in our information posts regarding Horse Registrations is our list of current and endorsed Studs/Breeders.

By supporting a Breeder registered with the AFWHS you have the assurance that the AFWHS can assist to complete registrations or transfers of horses provided the process as per the society's current guidelines is followed.

If you choose to purchase from a breeder not on this list, please do not assume the horse can be registered. The Afwhs is unable to chase up registrations that are pending, not submitted or missing application documents from private breeders.

If requiring a Transfer of Ownership of a AFWHS registered horse, please understand that you will need to be a financial member of the AFWHS to have a horse registered in your name.
Purchasing a horse with the Stud Prefix from the list below gives you piece of mind that the society has the background information on the registered horse and supplying a transfer should be a straightforward process if the guidelines are followed.

Purchasing a Friesian Warmblood should be an exciting and rewarding experience.
Unfortunately, we've seen many owners encounter issues when transferring a horse's existing registration or applying for a new registration with the AFWHS after being told their horse is eligible.

Over the coming weeks, we'll be sharing a series of informative posts explaining the registration and transfer processes, including what documentation is required and the common pitfalls to avoid.

The society will be offering a Best Performed Award to the highest placing 2026 AFWHS member entered on a society registered Fwb.
Simply include your current membership number when entering via Event Secretary and your all set!
