🌱 Grass Seed Season Has Arrived! 🌱

As the weather starts to warm up, grass seed season has arrived.

Over the last couple of weeks, we have already seen an increase in grass seeds being found in paws and ears.

Grass seeds are designed by nature to plant themselves. Their barbed shape grips onto fur, and as your pet moves, the seed can work its way forward — but not backwards. Once a seed reaches the skin, it can pierce through and migrate deeper into the body, potentially causing significant problems.

It is really important over the coming months that we regularly check our animals, particularly after walks or time spent outdoors.

Make sure you check:
- Between the toes and around the paw pads
- Inside and around the ears
- Under the collar
- Around the eyes
- In the armpits and groin
- Through the coat, especially on long-haired pets

If you notice your pet suddenly licking or chewing at a paw, shaking their head, scratching an ear, or developing a lump, swelling or sore area, please have them checked by a veterinarian.

Early detection can make a big difference when it comes to grass seeds. 🌾🐾

🐣 Reminder: It’s baby bird season!

Fauna Rescue has kindly put together this helpful checklist to make sure we are doing the right thing when we come across a baby bird.

Before intervening, please take a moment to check the guide — often, the best thing we can do is leave healthy fledglings where they are and give their parents a chance to care for them. 🐦💚

Let’s keep our little feathered friends safe this season!

Over the past few weeks, we’ve seen an increase in stray and wandering pets coming into the clinic.

The good news? Many have been successfully reunited with their families thanks to a registered, up-to-date microchip.

With council registrations due by the end of August, now is the perfect time to check that your pet’s microchip details are registered and up to date with a microchip registry and Dogs and Cats Online (DACO) in SA.

Remember, it’s important to update your pets microchip details if you move house, change your phone number, or adopt/ rehome a pet.

A current microchip record can make all the difference in helping a lost pet find their way home.

Please note: Microchipping is mandatory in accordance with the Dog and Cat Management Act 1995.

If you would like to microchip your pet, please contact the clinic on (08) 8382 8055.
