Buffalo Fly — More Than Just an Irritation 🪰🐄

Buffalo flies aren’t just annoying.

Heavy fly burdens can directly impact performance in growing cattle.

Fly pressure can lead to:

• Reduced grazing time
• Increased energy expenditure (tail swishing, head throwing, bunching)
• Skin damage and secondary infections
• Eye irritation
• Increased stress levels

All of that adds up to one thing:

📉 Reduced average daily gain

When cattle are fighting flies, they’re not efficiently converting feed.

In young stock, that can mean:
• Delayed target weights
• Longer time to market
• Lower overall productivity

Prevention & Control Options

✔ Strategic use of insecticide ear tags
✔ Backline or pour-on treatments
✔ Monitoring fly numbers early — don’t wait for heavy burdens
✔ Rotating chemical groups to slow resistance
✔ Managing untreated animals that act as reservoirs

Early intervention is key. Once fly numbers explode, control becomes harder and less effective.

If you’re unsure about timing or resistance in your area, have a conversation before the pressure builds.
