🐾 Welcome Brooke! 🐾
This week we’ve had the pleasure of welcoming Brooke to our clinic team in Charters Towers as part of her veterinary studies.

One of the things Brooke enjoys most about vet school is the opportunity to gain experience across the many different areas of the profession. Through her placements, she has worked across a range of livestock industries including cattle stations, feedlots, dairies and mixed animal practices.

Brooke is particularly drawn to rural practice because of the responsibility, autonomy and variety that comes with the role. She believes it’s more than just a job—it’s the kind of work that helps shape you as a person—and she’s looking forward to continuing her journey and growth as a veterinarian.

Her main interests include cattle production, surgery and emergency medicine, although she’s keen to continue exploring all the opportunities that rural veterinary practice has to offer.

When she’s not studying or in the clinic, Brooke enjoys CrossFit, going to the gym and spending time outdoors.

Brooke is excited to be here in Charters Towers and is looking forward to helping wherever she can. If you see her around the clinic this week, be sure to say hello!

As cats enter their golden senior years, they may require regular manicure maintenance! 🐱

Older cats are more likely to suffer from painful claw overgrowth as:
✂️ They may not be able to use scratching surfaces as vigorously as they used to, due to reduced activity or mobility
✂️ The outer sheaths of their claws may fail to shed normally, leading to a gradual thickening of their claws

It’s a good idea to check your cat’s claws weekly, not forgetting their little dewclaws, a.k.a. “thumb nails”! If you need any help safely clipping your pet’s nails, consult our helpful team.

With roughly 80% of dogs 8+ years of age suffering from osteoarthritis, it may be a relief to know that there are lots of ways to support your doggo’s joint health and comfort. 🐕

The symptoms of arthritis can be relieved by:
🦴 Joint health supplements, such as fish oil or PEA administered at therapeutic dosages
🦴 Pain relief medications, such as NSAIDs or prescription CBD oil
🦴 Disease-modifying drugs, such as pentosan polysulfate sodium
🦴 Healthy weight loss

Did you know that cats affected by arthritis usually won’t limp? 🐈

Instead, these creaky kitties will often show more subtle symptoms, such as:
🦴 A reduced ability to self-groom, which may lead to changes in their coat condition or cleanliness
🦴 Difficulty squatting for toileting, which may lead to occasional misfires out of the litter tray
🦴 Hesitancy prior to jumping down or up

Did you know that the prominence of your pet’s eyes can change due to certain conditions? 👀

A dog’s or cat’s eyes may become more sunken or deeper set:
✅ As they age and lose some of the fatty tissue behind their eyeballs
✅ If they become very dehydrated
✅ If they have a painful eye condition that causes reflex retraction of the eyeball
✅ If they develop a nerve condition called Horner’s syndrome

If you spot any changes in your pet’s eyes, it’s always best to have our eye-sperienced vets take a look!
