🦟 HEARTWORM PREVENTION: WHICH OPTION IS RIGHT FOR YOUR DOG? 🐾

Heartworm is present in the mosquito population here in Charters Towers. The good news is that heartworm disease is preventable!
There are several options available, each with its own pros and cons.

💉 1. YEARLY INJECTION
✅ Pros
- 12 months of heartworm protection with one injection.
- No monthly doses to remember.
- Can be combined with your dog's annual vet visit.
❌ Cons
- Does not provide complete protection against fleas, ticks and all intestinal worms, so additional parasite prevention may be needed.
- Cannot be given at home unlike other prevention methods.

💊 2. MONTHLY TABLETS OR CHEWS
✅ Pros
- Easy to give at home.
- Some combination products also protect against fleas, ticks and intestinal worms.
- Different products are available to suit your dog's needs.
❌ Cons
- Must be given on time every month.
- Some dogs refuse tablets or may spit them out.

💧 3. MONTHLY SPOT-ON TREATMENTS
✅ Pros
- Applied to the skin rather than given by mouth.
- A useful option for dogs that are difficult to tablet.
- Some products also protect against fleas and other parasites.
❌ Cons
- Must be applied regularly every month.
- Application can be messy, and bathing or swimming may affect some products.
- The parasites covered vary between products.

🐾 Which option is best?
The best choice depends on your dog's age, lifestyle and the other parasite protection they need.

⚠ Parvo virus alert 🐕

There have been many cases of Parvo virus diagnosed in town this week. We feel this may be the start of another outbreak

Parvovirus only affects animals that are either completely unvaccinated, or have not had the correct number of vaccines.

It is false that adult dogs are not affected. There have been significant numbers of adult dogs this week, and we have diagnosed a 6 year old dog with Parvovirus showing significant symptoms before. All these dogs have all been un/under vaccinated. None of them have been fully vaccinated.

Parvovirus is horrible for the animal experiencing it and despite our best efforts, not every patient will make it.

Treatment for parvovirus is incredibly intensive, requires a lot of staff involvement, infection control procedures and resources, therefore it is expensive for owners. As veterinary professionals it is very unpleasant to deal with.

Heartworm is spread by mosquitoes. An infected mosquito can transmit heartworm larvae when it bites your pet.

When an infected mosquito bites your pet, it can pass heartworm larvae into their bloodstream. These larvae develop into adult worms that can live in the heart and major blood vessels leading to the lungs.

🐾 Grazing: How Much Is Too Much?

Some pets like to graze throughout the day, especially cats. But when food is always available, it can be difficult to know exactly how much they are eating.

🍽️ The problem with free-feeding

It can be easy to accidentally overfeed.
You may not know how much your pet has actually eaten each day.
Multiple pets in the household can make portions difficult to monitor.
Extra treats and table scraps can add more calories than expected.
Over time, this can contribute to unwanted weight gain.

💡 Try measuring the day’s food
Instead of continually topping up the bowl, measure out your pet’s total daily portion in the morning. This allows them to graze throughout the day while you still know how much they are receiving.

For pets that are trying to lose weight, portion control becomes even more important. Your veterinary team can help work out an appropriate daily amount based on your pet’s weight, body condition, diet and lifestyle.

✅ TRUTH: Maintaining a healthy body condition can support your pet’s mobility, joint health, activity levels and overall wellbeing.

✅ TRUTH: Begging doesn’t always mean your pet needs more food. Pets can learn that begging gets them a tasty reward!

How Nutrition Can Affect Your Pet’s Health 🐾

Good nutrition plays an important role in keeping our pets healthy throughout their lives. Just like people, pets need a balanced diet that provides the right nutrients and amount of energy for their individual needs. Feeding an inappropriate diet, too many calories or too many treats over time can contribute to health problems.

Poor nutrition and inappropriate foods can contribute to:
🐾 Obesity-related health problems – Carrying excess weight can increase the risk of diabetes, breathing difficulties, heart and cardiovascular problems, heat intolerance and reduced quality of life.

🐾 Joint and mobility problems – Excess weight can put additional stress on joints and may make it harder for pets to move comfortably.

🐾 Pancreatitis – Eating high-fat foods, particularly rich table scraps or fatty treats, can contribute to pancreatitis in some pets. Pancreatitis can cause vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhoea and reduced appetite.

🐾 Skin and coat problems – An unbalanced diet may affect skin and coat health.
🐾 Digestive problems – Sudden diet changes, excessive treats or inappropriate foods can contribute to vomiting or diarrhoea.

🐾 Dental disease – Some foods and feeding habits can contribute to plaque and tartar build-up.

🐾 Nutritional deficiencies or excesses – Feeding an unbalanced or inappropriate diet can mean your pet isn't receiving the nutrients they need or may be receiving too much of certain nutrients.

A healthy diet isn't about finding one food that works for every pet. Nutrition should be tailored to your pet's individual needs, lifestyle and life stage. Remember, some human foods can also be toxic to pets, so always check that something is safe before sharing it.
