Did you know your horse's hooves keep growing their whole life, a bit like our fingernails?
Shoes do a great job protecting the hoof wall from wear, but they cannot guard against everything. The sole, the frog and the soft structures underneath are still exposed, which is why bruising, abscesses and thrush can show up even on a well shod horse.
That is the part people often miss. Shoes are one layer of protection, not a full shield. Healthy hooves come down to the everyday stuff: regular trimming, picking out feet daily, keeping things clean and dry, and catching small changes before they become big ones.
There is an old saying in the game that still holds up. No hoof, no horse.

Supporting mental wellbeing in the farrier industry

Mental wellbeing is just as important as physical strength in the farrier industry. Let’s create a culture where supporting each other’s mental health is a priority. As farriers, we often work alone, under pressure, and sometimes without the support we need. It’s time to change that.

This May, I’m participating in the Stride to Survive challenge, raising awareness and funds for Talk2MeBro, a charity that provides free mental health catch-ups and support to those in industries like ours where mental health struggles aren’t always talked about.

Talk2MeBro is a fantastic charity dedicated to making mental health support accessible for all. They offer safe spaces for men to connect, share their experiences, and access the help they need. Their work is changing lives, and every dollar raised helps to keep these support services running.

So grateful to be working with other equine professionals who care about the long term vision. Thanks to all involved and especially to Luna for being so wonderful during this all ☺️

Today Luna had her second round of X-rays at the Gold Coast Equine Hospital, and thankfully the results brought me some much-needed relief.

Her sole depth and hoof angle have shown huge improvement, which means all the hard work, corrective farrier care, and rehabilitation are moving in the right direction.

While the pedal bone degeneration will never reverse, the specialists were happy that it is not severe. It also appears the burst abscess played a major role in the lameness and likely made things look like things were going backwards when in reality, she was still progressing underneath it all.

Luna has now been fitted with heart bar shoes, which she’ll wear for the next 10 weeks (with a changeover in 5 weeks), before hopefully transitioning back into standard shoes. The goal now is for her to be completely paddock sound — and today finally gave me hope that we’ll get there.

Good news at last… thank God.

And honestly, Hoof Gold supplement has been incredible throughout this process. I truly believe it’s one of the best hoof supplements on the market.
