With all this cold rainy weather we are struggling to keep up with Lucerne bales due to cost and availability and have resorted to Oaten rounds to keep everyone warm! We also have increased feed requirements for our avian species!
For hindgut fermenters like horses and guinea pigs) facing rainy cold weather requires abundant roughage is a physiological necessity rather than just a dietary staple. Fiber fermentation in the cecum and colon acts as an internal heater, generating critical body heat. The colder and wetter it gets, the more roughage they require to thermoregulate and maintain body condition.
ruminants include cattle, sheep, and goats also require more roughage and energy in cold rainy weather as the breakdown of fiber in the rumen generates internal body heat, which is essential to keep the animal warm when temperatures drop.
Avian birds and poultry burn significantly more calories and protein to maintain their high internal body temperature around 41°C and to shiver against damp, wet, windy conditions.
Every dollar counts!

Straw is also very useful to keep animals out of the wet and provides a great bedding in wet weather as straw allows water to drain away rather than absorbing the water.
