🍂 AUTUMN WORMING REMINDER 🍂

This time of year is prime time to check your horse’s worm burden — but that doesn’t mean every horse needs drenching.

Many horses carry low egg counts and don’t require treatment, while others may need targeted worming.

🔬 That’s where a Faecal Egg Count (FEC) comes in.

✔ Avoid over-worming
✔ Save money
✔ Help prevent resistance
✔ Treat only when needed

We’re seeing a mix of results already this season — some horses at 0, others much higher.

📍 WormScope testing available locally at Cessnock NSW
💲 $20 per horse

🐴 WormScope Wednesday

Ever wondered what we’re actually looking for during a FEC test?

Under the microscope, we’re identifying tiny parasite eggs in your horse’s manure — something you’d never see with the naked eye.

💡 These results help determine:
• Your horse’s worm burden
• Whether treatment is actually needed

👉 Not every horse needs worming
👉 Not all worm burdens are the same

That’s why testing is so important.

Test. Don’t guess.

🐴 Following on from yesterday… let’s talk about sand.

It’s something we’re picking up more often — and many owners don’t even realise it’s there.

💡 Even horses with zero egg counts can still have sand present.

Over time, sand can build up and lead to:
• Irritation
• Digestive issues
• Colic

👉 It often goes unnoticed until it becomes a problem.

Testing doesn’t just give you worm counts — it can highlight other risks too.

Test. Don’t guess.

🐴 WormScope Wednesday – Parasite Tip

Testing before worming helps ensure you are treating the right horses at the right time.

Faecal Egg Count testing allows horse owners to make informed decisions about parasite management instead of worming on a schedule.

This helps keep parasite burdens under control while also slowing the development of drench resistance.

🐴 15 horses. One property. Very different results.

We recently tested 15 horses — and the variation was significant 👇

📊
🟢 20% had zero egg count
🟡 47% had low counts
🔴 33% had moderate to high counts

💡 Even on the same property — and across different paddocks — worm burdens varied greatly between horses.

Some had no detectable eggs,
while others were carrying much higher loads.

👉 This is why one-size-fits-all worming doesn’t work.

Every horse is different — and without testing, you're just guessing.

✨ Testing gives you the information to treat correctly, not routinely.

🐴 WormScope Wednesday – Myth vs Truth

❌ Myth: If a horse looks healthy, it probably doesn’t have worms.

✔ Truth: Healthy horses can still have high parasite egg counts.

Many horses with high egg counts show no obvious symptoms, which is why Faecal Egg Count testing is such an important tool for parasite management.

Testing allows you to treat when needed rather than guessing, helping protect horse health and slow drench resistance.

🐴 Liver Fluke – Do Horse Owners Need to Worry? 🐴

You may have seen a bit of talk lately about liver fluke — especially with animals spending more time around dams and wet areas.

👉 But here’s the important part…

Liver fluke is primarily a concern for sheep and cattle, not horses.

🐎 In horses:
Cases are rare and usually only seen in:
▪️ Very wet, swampy environments
▪️ Properties shared with infected livestock
▪️ Areas with known fluke history

⚠️ Worth knowing:
Faecal egg counts (like the McMaster method we use at WormScope) don’t detect liver fluke — they’re designed for common equine parasites.

🔬 What we focus on at WormScope:
✔️ Strongyles (the big one!)
✔️ Other common equine parasites
✔️ Helping you avoid unnecessary drenching

Because in horses, over-worming is a much bigger issue than liver fluke 👌

💬 Our tip:
If you run sheep or cattle alongside your horses — or you’re on very wet ground — it might be worth having a chat with your vet.

For most horse owners though, your focus should stay on regular testing and targeted worming 👍
