The best way to ensure your rug will last is to start with a high-quality brand. Cheap and flimsy rugs are an investment that will just let you down.

To maintain your rug's durability and to help extend its life:
- Ensure the rug is properly fitted
- Repair small rips and tears as soon as you notice them
- Dust away any dirt or mud with a stiff brush
- Only put lightweight rugs in the washing machine
- Wash with cold water only
- Avoid bleach, detergents and fabric softeners
- Leave them to air dry
- For winter turnouts, hose them down and scrub

Spring can make the rugging schedule difficult to forecast, especially when the weather brings cold mornings and lovely afternoons. Layering is always a great go-to, but it's important to be aware which rugs work best with which.

Having fleece or cotton rugs as the under layer is a great choice to ensure fabric breathability while also providing comfort that helps keep your top rug clean.

For horses and ponies that feel the cold especially, you can add a 100g doona as the second layer for added warmth and comfort. Pairing these with a lightweight turnout makes changes easy when the day starts cold and begins to warm up, especially in the springtime. Alternatively, opting for a 300g top rug provides extra warmth for frosty mornings, older horses, ones recovering from illness or those that have a clipped coat for show season.
