I just thought I'd share this story with you, just to show how tough chicks in the egg can be.
Last week when Millie hatched out her eggs, one was left behind. No pips, no cheeping. I just assumed it was an egg that wasn't fertilised. So, I picked it up and placed it on the shelf in the shed to get rid of later.
Anyway, two days later, after a couple of cold nights, I saw it and went to thow it away. Because I don't want crows to get a habit of looking for eggs, I went outside and threw it hard against a tree to smash it. It cracked all over but didn't smash.
I picked it up and the chick, that I simply though had died before hatching fell out of the shell from chest height. I picked it up and felt the tiniest bit of movement and an almost inaudible chirp.
I immediately put it in my bra and after an hour I stick it in an incubatoer to heat it up, and it seemed to be recovering and moving more. It did die after a couple of hours, most likely from injuries from being thrown against a tree and falling, but I was amazed that it had survived all that.
Just goes to show that you have to be so careful with unhatched eggs if you haven't candled them to see what's happening before you throw them.
