Still covered in afterbirth he is probably less that 24 hours old.

After my little excavator seat got worn out and then eaten by goats I reached out to the skilled folks at TrimCraft Upholstery to see if they could sort it.

Did a quality job and when I went to collect they told meā€™ no charge, just happy to support the amazing work you do with the animalsā€™

They didnā€™t ask for this promotion but I think decent folks in the community need to be recognised. This is exactly how a community should be, helping each other out!

Very sad to report the wombat with mange that a group of us were trying to assist on the road outside Eventide Sanctuary has been killed today.
There was a plan to get him to the care and treatment he needed at wildlife vets. This was a different wombat to the one assisted a while ago so there must be a lot of mange spreading in this area now sadly.

I highly doubt anyone can say he ran out on them as he was virtually blind and moved very slowly.

Left in the road to bleed out the person that did this could not even check if he was deceased or clear it from the road. I saw many cars just drive over the top of him before I could safely move him to a place of dignity. As a large adult male I doubt the impact killed him outright.

The first journey many tourists do when they pick up their hire car at Hobart airport is drive to Port Arthur along this road, this is one of their first images of Tasmania and what they take back to their home country with them. I have personally been told this by many of them how confronting it is. You cannot truly measure how much financial, traumatic and long-term impact a single wombat laying in the road like this can cause to Tasmania as a whole, perhaps it stops members of that tourists family visiting next year and they go elsewhere and so it spreads? Why is nothing done about it?

What is happening to society? We need to care more about each other and our surroundings. People are living in a cocoon of work cubicles,social media and keyboards and spend time complaining about others but canā€™t pull over and get out the car to help an animal. Most accidents now, peopleā€™s first instinct is to grab a phone video instead of bloody helping!

Local councils need to stop wasting money digging up perfectly good footpaths for 6 months and look at some basic wildlife fencing along known wildlife routes. That wombat could flip a small car quite easily in the dark had I not taken it off the road. Why is it left to a handful of people that care to clean up the mess, much like dumped roosters. There is a handful of people caring enough to capture and rehome them around here. Others chuck them out the car and drive off looking at them in the rear view mirror.

Itā€™s not weak to care, some young lads need to lose this macho image of speeding around in jacked up 4x4s and with ā€˜aim here skippyā€™ stickers on the bull bars. This starts with education. Some of the toughest blokes I served with in the Army were quiet, kind men.

The standards you walk past is the standard you accept.

Letā€™s do bloody better than this.

Eventide Sanctuary is proud to be working with the crew from Build Up Tassie to help us construct a new small animal enclosure. We are getting continuous requests to take on rabbits, Guinea pigs and other small animals and to really give these animals the life they deserve we need a large outdoor shelter complete with living quarters!

This could be a great way for children to come to the sanctuary, support the sanctuary, spend time with some lovely creatures without the need to buy them from the pet shop and get bored with them a couple weeks later.

This was a perfect project to work with the young folks at Build up Tassie under the guidance of Morgan and her team.

Being a tradesman myself, having worked in all sorts of industries and areas I really think this is a brilliant organisation. One that actually achieves practical results and gives young people some valuable skills.
Some young folks just are not made for studying but make great future tradespeople. This gives them a pathway.

There seems to be a new ā€˜come for a chat and tell us how disadvantaged you are living in comfortable Australiaā€™, non for profit popping up every week in Tasmania and I seriously question what bloody good a lot of them actually do. They all seem to have a heap of staff, new cars, new office, fuel cards etc etc. Iā€™d love to see some accountability on what they actually achieve each week.
Meanwhile, local neighbourhood houses providing an essential service to the rural communities are having their funding slashed and the hospital emergency reception looks like a war zone!

Iā€™m heading to the Build Up Tassie workshop next week to do a talk on Eventide Sanctuary and a little bit about my journey. Letā€™s hope I keep them all awake!
