A Brush with Fame

Meet Ziggy, our adorable little dachshund with a special family connection!

Ziggy was an absolute star during her stitch removal today, remaining calm and collected throughout her visit.

Genetics can play an important role in our dogs, influencing everything from health predispositions to temperament and problem-solving abilities. But how much comes down to nature, and how much to nurture? It's the combination of genetics, environment and experiences that helps shape the dogs we know and love.

We're lucky to care for so many wonderful patients, each with their own unique personalities and stories to tell!

Happy Veterinary Nurses Day!

Today, we’re celebrating and thanking our wonderful veterinary nurses for everything they do behind the scenes and every day at Caringbah Vet.

From cuddling nervous patients and keeping them comfortable, to monitoring anaesthetics, assisting with procedures, caring for hospitalised animals and making sure every patient stays safe — our nurses do it all.

Their patience, compassion, knowledge and dedication make such a difference to the animals in our care and to their families.

Have you considered what handling tool suits your dog?

Our handsome black Lab friend Ivy is showing off her Halti, but there are plenty of options when it comes to walking and handling our dogs.

- Harnesses: comfortable and useful for many dogs, but don't automatically prevent pulling.
- Haltis: can provide excellent control for dogs who pull, but need to be introduced gradually and paired with training.
- Slip leads: convenient and useful in the right hands, with appropriate training and handling.
- Collars: a simple everyday option, particularly useful with an ID tag.
- Martingale collars: designed to gently tighten and help prevent a dog from backing out.
- Front-clip harnesses: can help redirect dogs who pull and support loose-lead training.

And sometimes, the equipment itself becomes part of the training!

Dogs can learn that different equipment means different activities:

🏖️ Harness = beach adventure
🚗 Harness = car ride
🎓 Halti = training walk
🏃 Lead = jogging or everyday walk

The goal isn't necessarily to find one piece of equipment for every situation — it's about finding what works safely and comfortably for your individual dog and the activity you're doing.

Meet Stella! 🐾

Stella has been a long-term visitor here at Caringbah Veterinary Hospital, and over the years, we’ve built a real connection with her.

Recently, at 10 years old, Stella needed to have her hind leg amputated. With careful veterinary care, patience and consistent care at home, she has made an amazing recovery.

Today, Stella is back to playing at the park, chasing the ball and acting like the big puppy she’s always been!

So, what does REST & RECOVERY look like for dogs?
- Non-strenuous exercise
- Controlled activity
- Mental stimulation
- Good nutrient intake
- Regular check-ins & monitoring
- Plenty of quality rest
- Positive encouragement
- Following their individual recovery plan
- And plenty of patience!

Every dog and every recovery is different. Giving them the right balance of rest, movement, nutrition and support can help them gradually rebuild their strength and confidence.

And Stella is a wonderful example of just how much our dogs can adapt. ❤️

🐾 Lumps & Bumps: When Should You Be Concerned?

Meet Bonnie! ❤️ Bonnie has had a few lumps removed over the years, but… she is always the very best girl. 🥰

Finding a new lump on your dog can be stressful. The good news is that not every lump is cancerous, but it’s important to have new or changing lumps checked by your vet.

Your vet may perform a fine needle aspirate (FNA), using a needle to collect cells from the lump to examine under the microscope in consult. This can help determine whether the lump appears benign or malignant and whether further investigation or treatment is needed.

Some lumps, such as mast cell tumours, can be unpredictable. When identified early and appropriately treated, most mast cell tumours can be cured with surgery alone.

So, if you notice a new, changing or unusual lump on your pet, don’t wait - get it checked early.

At Caringbah Veterinary Hospital, our vets can help with the assessment, diagnostic investigation and surgical treatment of lumps and bumps.

🐾 Obedience Training: How Good Is Your “Stay”? 👀

At Caringbah Vet, we love seeing well-trained dogs! Training is about more than just following commands - it reflects the time, patience, dedication and consistency an owner puts into building communication and trust with their dog.

Our dogs also deserve more credit for how well they learn to understand the words, cues and communication we use every day. 🐶🧠

“Stay” is a great exercise for teaching patience, calmness and self-control.

Once your dog has mastered the basics, you can make it more challenging by introducing the 3 D’s of training:
📍 Distance – How far can you move away?
⏱️ Duration – How long can they hold the stay?
👀 Distraction – Can they stay while the world around them gets more interesting?

Start simple and gradually build up each challenge.
And remember, even cats can learn training cues! 🐱

So, consider this your sign to practise your training today. How long can your pup “stay”? 🐾

Huge Congratulations to our newest graduates of Puppy Pre School, September 2026.

These food motivated pups were eager to learn, impress, and of course, make the most of all the tasty rewards along the way! They also had plenty of fun building their confidence, learning new skills and making friends.

Winie, Bella, Suki, Bonnie, Timber and Banjo have all been wonderful little graduates, showing just how much puppies can learn with positive reinforcement, patience and a little motivation.

Our trainer Scott loved watching each puppy develop their skills and seeing the bonds grow between the puppies and their owners. These clever pups have plenty of exciting adventures ahead with their families.

A very big congratulations to Max, who has recently graduated from the Responsible Pet Ownership (RPO) Program with DOGS NSW! 🐶🎓

This is something worth celebrating!

Completing a program like this takes time, commitment, patience and plenty of practice — not just from Max, but from his owners too. ❤️

We love seeing owners take the time to invest in their dogs beyond the basics. Training and enrichment aren't just about having a well-behaved dog; they provide opportunities for dogs to learn, problem-solve, build confidence, socialise and spend quality time with their people.

And the best part?
When you do more for your dog, you often find you're doing more for yourself too. 🥰

A walk, a training session, a new game, exploring somewhere different or simply spending time learning together can strengthen that special bond between you and your dog.

Caring for Our Dogs in Their Golden Years 💛

Our dogs are experts at hiding pain. They can’t tell us when something hurts, and often, the signs can be subtle.
A little slower getting up, less enthusiasm for walks, or simply not moving quite like they used to.

As our dogs enter their senior years, conditions like arthritis become increasingly common. Age, breed, weight, lifestyle and previous injuries can all play a part.

The good news? Pain doesn’t have to be a normal part of getting older. 🐶

A veterinary check-up can help identify early signs of discomfort and, with just a few questions and a thorough examination, your vet can develop a treatment and management plan suited specifically to your dog.

💛 Let’s help our golden oldies stay comfortable, active and happy for as long as possible.
