If the day ever comes that you choose to buy a dog from a breeder instead of adopting from a rescue, please, please know who and what you are buying.

Not all breeders are created equal. Some simply produce puppies. Others raise future family members with intention, ethics and extraordinary care.

I came across a Rhodesian Ridgeback breeder’s page this week and I was genuinely blown away. The level of dedication to giving their puppies the very best start in life is next level. Thoughtful early socialisation. Exposure to different environments. Building resilience. Teaching pups to be confident with other dogs but also secure on their own. Transparency in everything they do.

You can see it in their posts. You can feel it in the detail.

This is what ethical breeding looks like.

Registered means very little if there is no transparency. If you cannot meet the parents. If questions are deflected. If health testing is vague. If the environment is hidden. Those are red flags.

The page I’m sharing has a pinned post that clearly outlines green flags and red flags when looking for a breeder. If you ever consider going down that path, read it. Scroll. Ask questions. Expect openness.

Because how a puppy begins matters. It shapes the dog they become.

And every dog deserves the best possible start.

*** HUGE THANKS to everyone who has donated towels and blankets to the hospital. We now have more than plenty for our furry friends so no more donations please. Thanks everyone. ***

Got any old blankets and towels you no longer need?

We would love to put them to good use as patient bedding in our new hospital in Perth Road. These items keep our animals cosy, warm and comfortable when they're in our care.

(No sheets or crocheted items please.)

Please drop off to reception at 11 Perth Road, Broadmeadow. 🙏

Big thanks - from the staff and patients at AREC. 😍

Please share and be aware this holiday break 🤍

Last night, this beautiful female koala was hit on the Calder Freeway and left injured on the road.
Two people, Laura and Lila, saw her, stopped, rendered assistance and called Wildlife Victoria. Because of them, she wasn’t left to die on the side of the freeway.

Her injuries were severe. We brought her back to our shelter for a proper assessment, but she had a broken leg and internal trauma. There was no chance of recovery, and we had no choice but to end her suffering.

That decision is never easy. It weighs heavily every time. My heart breaks for each one lost.
She was young. She should’ve had years ahead of her. She is now buried on our property.

We’ve done countless posts asking people to slow down and drive to the conditions. We’ve done newspaper articles, and Karl has spoken at the Parliamentary Inquiry into wildlife road-strike. I’m struggling to find new words, because for us it is the same story — just with different, very real victims.

So can we ask you a favour?
Please help be their voice.

If you’re able, share this message with family, friends, and coworkers. We desperately need more people aware, we need the message to reach others.

If you haven’t already, please save Wildlife Victoria’s emergency number in your phone:
📞 03 8400 7300 (other states have their own wildlife rescue numbers).

One call can save a life or prevent suffering.

Koalas are blissfully unaware of what roads & cars/trucks are.
But as drivers, we all understand the danger roads pose to wildlife, and with that understanding comes responsibility.

Until real, meaningful solutions are put in place, the simplest actions remain the most powerful ones: slowing down, staying alert, and making the call if you do hit wildlife.

Please don’t drive on without reaching out for help.
Please don’t assume someone else will.

Because every koala deserves more than fear, pain, or being left alone — and sometimes, your choice is the difference between life, mercy, and unnecessary suffering.

We have truck drivers in B-doubles who reach out to us because they cannot safely stop. If someone driving a B-double at 100 km/h can make a call to get a koala help, then anyone can.

Together we can all show compassion.

🐾Attention Victorians 🐾
Luna needs a loving active home with no pets. 💞

After over 100 days in our care, lovely Luna is starting to give up hope she'll ever have a home of her very own.

After an unstable start to life, she's been trying her best to trust the world again. And try she has.

Slowly, but surely, we've watched Luna feel safe and settled, build bonds and trust with our staff, and begin to master her training.

Luna needs an active and physically confident home who can also take things slow while she learns about her new safe space. She's also quite fearful of other animals, so no other pets please.

With her favourite people, Luna is a wriggly shadow who leans in close for pats, adores bum scratches and might just hold the record for fastest tail wags. If you can give this rescue dog a second chance at love, please come and meet her at our Burwood shelter 💖

Loose lead isnt natural. It’s a skill that has to be learnt. Biomechanically, dogs are built to move faster than us. Dogs choose to shift to a natural trot and on average walk at 2.5 - 4 mph (Hildebrand, 1966) where us naked monkeys on the otherhand average 2-3 mph walking (Kirtley, 2006). Do you know what 2.5 feels like? You should!

Because the mismatch alone creates tension — physically with the lead and emotionally in the relationship. Infact Dogs Trust found 30% of owners considered it a reason to rehome.

Now add in breed differences with research by Fischer & Lilje (2011) suggesting that Different breeds have different locomotive profiles based on original function. Malinois and Vizslas who are bred to move, track, cover ground; hearding breed like kelpies and collies who are bred to arc out infront; scent hounds like Beagles and Bloodhounds - designed to follow their noses with purpose, drive and speed; and of course breeds like Huskies who are literally bred and built to pull - it’s in the actual job description.

Its not a suprise that Rooney & Cowan (2011) found Lead tension and restricted gait was specifically a negative welfare marker for working breeds.

So when we expect all dogs to plod beside us through a park at human pace, ignoring smells, distractions, and natural instinct…we’re arent asking for a behaviour: We’re asking for the dog to restrain their pace, suppress their instincts, and constantly self-regulate.

In my opinion loose lead is one of the three essential skills I believe every dog pro needs to understand in depth - gait, drive, motivation, mechanics, assessment, different technique and exercise, consequence gradients and all.

Because when you understand what you’re really asking for,
you stop calling it stubbornness
and start training it like the advanced skill it actually is. And this leads to way better pet dogs with way happier relationships. ###
