With the first beautiful days of spring beginning to arrive, warmer weather, longer days and fresh growth are very welcome indeed. Unfortunately, the change of season can also create favourable conditions for fleas and their life cycle.

And while rabbits may not be the first little companions we associate with fleas, they can certainly be affected by them.

At The Petal Fleur Boutique, one product commonly recommended by rabbit-savvy veterinarians is Revolution® Puppy & Kitten, containing selamectin. It is used in rabbits for the treatment and prevention of certain external parasites, including fleas.

A few important things to remember:

🌿 Rabbit parasite treatments are not interchangeable. Products that may be suitable for dogs or cats are not automatically safe for rabbits.

🌿 Never use a flea treatment containing fipronil, such as Frontline®, on a rabbit. Fipronil can be dangerously toxic to rabbits.

🌿 Correct dosing matters. Although Revolution Puppy & Kitten is commonly used in rabbits, your rabbit’s individual dose and treatment schedule should always be discussed with a rabbit-savvy veterinarian, particularly as some uses may be off-label.

🌿 Treat the environment too. Flea eggs and developing stages can be present in bedding, carpets and surrounding areas, so good hygiene and regular cleaning form an important part of parasite management.

As we move into the warmer months, now is a lovely time to make parasite prevention part of your rabbit’s spring wellness routine. A little preparation can help keep those precious paws comfortable, healthy and itch-free.

Because when it comes to our smallest family members, thoughtful preventative care is always in season.

THE HEAT SAFETY EDIT.

With the beautiful sunshine we have been enjoying of late, now is the perfect time to turn our attention to an important part of summer rabbit care - keeping our precious buns cool, comfortable and safe.

While we may welcome the arrival of warmer days, our rabbits are rather less enthusiastic. Their beautiful coats and limited ability to regulate their body temperature mean that rising temperatures deserve a little extra consideration.

As summer approaches, a few thoughtful preparations can make all the difference.

🌿 Create a cool retreat:
Ensure your rabbit always has access to a comfortably cool, shaded and well ventilated space, particularly during the warmest part of the day.

💧 Fresh water, always:
Keep fresh, cool water readily available and consider offering more than one water source on particularly warm days.

❄️ A little cool comfort:
Chilled ceramic tiles can provide a lovely place to stretch out, while a frozen water bottle placed nearby gives your rabbit the choice to settle alongside it when they wish.

🥬 A touch of extra hydration:
Freshly washed leafy greens, served with a little water still clinging to the leaves, can offer some additional moisture alongside their usual diet.

🤍 Prepare before the heat arrives:
Fans can assist with air circulation without being directed constantly at your rabbit, while air conditioning can be invaluable through the more unforgiving days of an Australian summer.

And perhaps most importantly, know your rabbit’s normal.

A rabbit who becomes unusually quiet or lethargic, appears distressed, weak, breathes abnormally or simply seems not quite themselves during hot weather should be taken seriously. Seek veterinary assistance promptly if you are concerned.

Summer care needn’t be complicated. Often it is simply a collection of small, thoughtful measures prepared ahead of time that help our rabbits remain comfortable while the temperature outside begins to climb.

Because beautiful summer days should be enjoyed with the reassurance that our smallest family members are comfortable, too.

THE ENRICHMENT EDIT | A Little More Than Something To Do.

For rabbits, enrichment isn't simply entertainment- it is an important part of creating an environment in which they can express the behaviours that come naturally to them.

To forage. To dig. To investigate. To chew. To hide. To explore.

And often, the most valuable enrichment is wonderfully simple.

A cardboard box becomes somewhere to remodel rather enthusiastically. A tunnel invites exploration. A handful of hay tucked somewhere unexpected turns breakfast into a foraging exercise. A scattering of bunny safe herbs encourages those clever little noses to get to work.

Enrichment offers choice, curiosity and purpose within a rabbit's environment- encouraging both physical activity and mental engagement.

It doesn't need to be expensive, elaborate or Pinterest perfect. In fact, sometimes the humble cardboard box receives considerably more appreciation than the beautiful toy we carefully selected for them.

At The Petal Fleur Boutique, enrichment forms an important part of each guest's stay. We thoughtfully provide opportunities to explore and engage while also recognising that every rabbit is wonderfully individual.

Some are enthusiastic excavators.

Some are dedicated foragers.

Some consider cardboard renovation their life's calling.

And others? Well… sometimes the greatest enrichment of all is investigating absolutely everything they're probably not supposed to.

There is something truly special about a recommendation.

Every time someone says, “I told a friend about you,” it means more than you may realise.

It is our absolute pleasure to welcome our guests in residence - the beautiful Olivia & Chips.

Olivia, our gorgeous brown girl, has arrived with an air of quiet elegance and just the right amount of curiosity, while handsome little Chips, dressed rather impeccably in black, is settling beautifully into Boutique life.

For the duration of their stay, these two will have their own private retreat to call home - with plenty of space to explore, cosy places to disappear into, enrichment to keep inquisitive minds occupied and, naturally, a little indulgence along the way.

There is something we particularly love about welcoming a rabbit families through our doors. Rabbit teeth continue to grow throughout their lives, making appropriate diet and chewing opportunities an important part of everyday care.

But dental problems aren't always obvious.

A change in eating habits, dropping food, difficulty chewing, excessive salivation or weight loss can sometimes be clues that something isn't quite right.

Rabbits are remarkably good at concealing discomfort, which is why knowing your rabbit well matters.

A quiet observation today: watch your bunny eat.

Do they seem comfortable and completely themselves?
