Something new at Bayside K9 🐾

From next week, we’re running all our training in Carbrook and online. For the next 4 weeks we won’t be coming out to homes, as Midori needs me close by for a little while.

Here’s how you can train with us:
📍 In Carbrook One on one sessions with your dog.
💻 Online Everything from your first behaviour deep dive and plan through to ongoing private sessions, all over Zoom or Google Meet. Your dog gets to stay in their own space, right where the everyday stuff actually happens, and there’s no travel needed.

If you’re a current client, we’ll be in touch over the next few days to chat about what works best for you and your dog.

The way we train isn’t changing, and neither is the support you get. This is just the beginning, and we’ve got some exciting things on the way for Bayside K9, so keep an eye out 👀

I broke my back shovelling horse s**t, and that’s kind of how I ended up training dogs.

Hi, I’m Roxy, the owner and head trainer here at Bayside K9 Training. There are a lot of new faces around here lately, so I figured it was time to reintroduce myself.

Putting this post together turned into a lot more than I expected. I’ve spent the last few days going through old photos. Kentucky, the broodmares and foals, the stables, the racing days. It honestly feels like I’m looking at a whole lifetime ago.

Back then I was so sure my life was going to be horses. I didn’t know what the job would be, I just knew that was me. Then I broke my back, came home, and for a while I had no idea what I was doing or where life was going.

The one thing that didn’t change through any of it was Midori. The $150 rescue pup I picked up in my first year of uni, who got me through some really s**tty times and somehow ended up being the reason I do what I do now.

I don’t miss the 2am starts. But looking back through all of this, I wouldn’t change any of it, because it all led here. To Midori, to this business, and to you guys and your dogs.

If your sweet puppy turned into a teenager overnight, keep reading!

One day they were listening. Now they're pulling on the lead, ignoring their name and losing their mind every time another dog walks past.

Nothing has gone wrong. This is adolescence and it's the stage where the right help makes the biggest difference.

This is for you if:

🐶 Your dog is between 6 months and 2 years and has suddenly "forgotten" everything
🐶 Walks have become something you dread instead of enjoy
🐶 They get overexcited, overwhelmed or reactive around dogs and people

Honestly? Some days, yes.

When I became a dog trainer, I thought the job was dogs and humans. Train the dog, help the human, go home covered in fur. That was the whole plan.

Nobody told me I’d also need to become a social media expert. Learning how to post, what a hook is, how to talk to my phone without feeling like a complete idiot. Then there’s the website, the booking system, the emails, the admin. None of it has anything to do with dog training, and all of it was the last thing I thought I’d have to figure out.

Creating content has to be one of the most awkward, weird, at times stressful things I do as a ‘dog trainer’.

It’s also kind of fun.

And if me feeling awkward on camera is how you found us, or how you picked up one thing that made life with your dog a bit easier, then I’ll keep doing it.

So no, I’m not an influencer. I’m a dog trainer who had to learn to press record.

🐾 Taking your dog out for a weekend coffee? Teach them “MIDDLE”! ☕️🐶

Cafés, markets, pubs and busy weekend spots can be exciting (and sometimes overwhelming) for our dogs.
One simple skill that can make being out and about SO much easier is teaching your dog to walk or settle in “middle” between your legs. 👇

✨ Keeps your dog safely tucked away from people walking past
✨ Helps prevent strangers from reaching down to pat your dog without asking
✨ Gives your dog a little more space and security in busy environments
✨ Makes navigating crowded cafés, footpaths and markets much easier
✨ Gives YOU a simple way to advocate for your dog when they need a little breathing room

Sixteen years of owning Shepherds. Years of working with other trainers. And still feeling stuck.

That’s where Bear and Lupa’s family was when they first reached out.

Bear was pulling their arm off on every walk and losing his mind whenever he saw another dog. Lupa, who they’d raised from a puppy, had grown into a worried girl. She was scared of people and noises and got overwhelmed anywhere busy or new.

Two dogs, same home, completely different reasons behind what they were doing. That’s the part that so often gets missed. You can know dogs inside out, but if the plan doesn’t match what’s actually driving the behaviour, it won’t stick.

So that’s where we started. We worked out the root cause for each dog, made sure the family understood the why behind every exercise, and built plans that fit into real life.

In their words, the consistency they’re seeing now has been “absolutely mind blowing.” Lupa has made huge progress with her confidence, and issues they’d been working on for years finally have a plan that works. 🐾
