Our 6-Week Adolescent Dog Program is designed around something much bigger than obedience.

It’s about teaching the life skills that make living with your dog easier and helping YOU understand how to communicate with them in a way that actually makes sense.

Graduation day for our ADP crew! 🎓🐾

Six weeks ago these guys were bouncing off walls, blowing off recall and testing every boundary they could find. Watch them now. Loose leads, solid recall, actually listening even with distractions everywhere.

So proud of every dog and every human in this group. You put the work in and it shows.

If your adolescent dog is currently testing your patience, eating the couch, or acting like they’ve never heard their name before... this is exactly why the program exists. Teenage hormones are real and you don’t have to white-knuckle it through this stage alone.

I was pondering this one in the car…
🤔

Why are we often more comfortable with emotional punishment than with a very small, appropriately timed physical correction?

And more importantly…

Is emotional punishment automatically kinder?

Not necessarily.

We tend to judge punishment by how it looks to us and a physical correction can look confronting.

But emotional punishment can look completely harmless.

- Withdrawing affection.
- Ignoring your dog.
- Using frustration or anger.
- Intimidating them.
- Making them feel like they’ve “upset” you.

There may be no physical mark but that doesn’t mean there isn’t an impact.

Our dogs experience the world through their nervous system. Repeated uncertainty, fear, social isolation or not understanding why our behaviour has suddenly changed can create significant stress, particularly when they don’t understand what behaviour actually caused it or what they should do instead.

And I think this is something we don’t talk about enough.

Training shouldn’t be about making our dogs feel guilty for getting something wrong.

It should be about clear communication:

“That behaviour isn’t going to work. Here’s what I want you to do instead.”

🚨Disclosure: We do not condone violence, abuse, excessive force, or anything intended to cause pain, fear or injury to a dog.

The question shouldn’t only be:

“Did that correction hurt?”

We should also be asking:

“What did that experience teach my dog about me, themselves, and the world around them?”

And I think that’s a conversation worth having.
