🦢🐾 Keeping Wildlife Safe Is Our Responsibility

Following the recent incident at Yerrabi Pond involving a dog attacking a swan and cygnet, it’s an important reminder about responsible dog ownership.

Even in designated off-leash areas, dogs need to remain under effective control at all times. If your dog cannot reliably respond to you around wildlife, other dogs, people or exciting distractions, they shouldn't be off lead in an unfenced public space.

Chasing wildlife doesn't make a dog “bad”—prey drive can be incredibly powerful. That's why management matters. A lead or long line allows dogs to explore while keeping wildlife safe.

🦢 Wildlife shouldn't pay the price for us overestimating our dog's recall.

As a community, we can help prevent incidents like this by giving wildlife plenty of space and keeping dogs on lead when we're unsure of their response.

🐾 Dog Safety Starts With Awareness

A serious dog bite occurred in my local area recently involving a child riding a scooter past a dog being walked on lead.

I don’t have all the details, so I won’t speculate about exactly what happened. From the reported injuries, the incident sounds consistent with a Level 4+ bite.

An incident this serious is an important reminder about dog safety.

🛴 Scooters, bikes and skateboards can trigger chase/herding behaviour in some dogs and/or frighten them when passing quickly, particularly from behind.

👧 Teach kids to give unfamiliar dogs space—slow down, move wider or get off the scooter/bike if there isn’t enough room to pass safely.

🐕 If you’re walking your dog and see or hear a scooter, bike or skateboard approaching, move off the path where possible and give them space to pass.

This is not about blaming the child. Dog handlers are responsible for managing their dogs. If your dog may chase, lunge or react to fast movement, create distance and use appropriate safety measures.

🐾 A little awareness from everyone can help keep kids, dogs and our community safer.

🐾 Does Anyone Actually Call Their Dog by Their Real Name? 😂

You carefully choose the perfect name for your dog… and then somehow, over time, that name evolves into approximately 47 completely unrelated nicknames. 🤣

It starts innocently enough…

🐶 Maggie → Mags → Maggie Moo → Moo Moo → Miggy Moo → Moo
🐶 Andy → Ands → Andy Pandy → Panda → Andy Pants → Pants

And before you know it, you're standing in the kitchen calling out something absolutely ridiculous—and your dog knows exactly who you're talking to. 😂

The best part? Dogs are brilliant at learning that all these strange words, tones and variations mean them—especially when they're followed by attention, food or something fun!

🐾 Thinking About Bringing Home a Second Dog?
Adding another dog to your family can be incredibly rewarding—but it's important to remember that not every dog wants a canine companion.
Before adopting, consider:
🐶 Does your current dog enjoy the company of other dogs, or simply tolerate them?
🏡 Introduce the dogs on neutral ground before bringing the new dog home.
⏳ Take introductions slowly. Don't expect them to become best friends overnight.
🍖 Feed separately and provide each dog with their own bed, toys, and safe space to reduce conflict.
💙 Continue spending one-on-one time with both dogs so neither feels left out.
👀 Supervise interactions, especially during the first few weeks, and learn to recognise signs that either dog needs a break.
Remember, success isn't measured by dogs constantly playing together. Many dogs are happiest simply coexisting peacefully and respecting each other's space.
A thoughtful introduction and realistic expectations can help set both dogs up for a successful lifelong relationship.

🐾 Pattern Games with Kyla 💛

Today we’ve been working on pattern games with the gorgeous Kyla to help support her with her anxiety and reactivity—and she’s doing really well! 🥰

Pattern games create simple, predictable routines that can help dogs feel safer and more confident when the world around them feels a little overwhelming.

For dogs like Kyla, it’s not about forcing them to “get over” what worries them. It’s about giving them predictability, choice and skills to help them cope while working at a pace they’re comfortable with.

Kyla has been doing such a great job learning the games and building confidence. 🐶👏

Small steps, positive experiences and lots of opportunities to succeed. 💛🐾

A little preparation before your baby arrives can make a big difference.

🐾 Why Every Dog Should Be Muzzle Trained

When people see a dog wearing a muzzle, they often assume the dog is aggressive or dangerous. In reality, a muzzle is simply a safety tool—just like a seatbelt in a car. We don't wear seatbelts because we expect to crash; we wear them just in case.

Muzzle training isn't just for dogs at risk of biting. It can be incredibly valuable for many situations throughout a dog's life.

Here are just a few examples:

🏥 Veterinary Care
Even the friendliest dog may bite if they're in severe pain or frightened during an emergency. A dog that's already comfortable wearing a muzzle experiences far less stress if one is needed.

🚑 Injuries and Emergencies
If your dog is hit by a car, injured on a walk, or trapped somewhere, pain and fear can cause them to react defensively. A muzzle protects everyone involved while allowing your dog to receive treatment.
