Canberra Nosework Training Every dog has an incredible nose. Let's put it to work! Join Certified Nosework Instructors John Sam and Amy Smith. From the very first class, everything changed.

Fun, rewarding scent work classes that build confidence, strengthen the bond between you and your dog, and provide enrichment they'll love. John Sam
Head Trainer

John has always shared his life with dogs and has long been involved in training through local dog clubs. While his professional background began in IT — holding a Master’s Degree in Information Technology — his passion ultimately led him down a very different path. In 2016, John discovered Nose Work, and it was a turning point. After seeing the profound benefits this activity had for his own reactive Labrador, he became deeply committed to learning more about scent work and its impact on canine confidence, behaviour, and wellbeing. What started as a personal journey quickly became a professional calling. John has been training dogs professionally since 2017 and is the founder of Canberra Nosework Training. Qualifications and professional memberships:
• Certified Nose Work Instructor (CNWI) — one of the first in Australia
• ANKC Foundation Scent Work Judge
• Qualified Canine Behaviour Practitioner
• Diploma in Canine Behaviour (International School for Canine Psychology & Behaviour)
• Member of the Pet Professional Guild Australia

Amy Smith
Head Trainer

Amy has shared her life with dogs for as long as she can remember, but her journey into dog training — and later scent work — began when a tiny bundle of chaos came into her life. Little Comet arrived fearful and anxious, struggling to cope in the big, overwhelming human world. Outside of home, he communicated with his teeth. Inside, he was playful, affectionate, and full of joy. Like many guardians of complex dogs, Amy found herself excluded from many of the activities dog owners are told they should be able to enjoy with their dogs. With a background in horse training, Amy knew there had to be a better way. That search led her to K9 Nose Work® and training alongside John. Scent work allowed Comet to tap into his natural instincts, helping him find calm, confidence, and purpose in a world that had once overwhelmed him. Today, Amy and Comet are successfully trialling in scent work games, building a partnership grounded in trust and communication. Comet’s younger sisters, Cricket and Bowie, have since joined the fun and are following closely in his pawprints. Qualifications and professional memberships:
• Associate Nose Work Instructor (ANWI)
• National Dog Trainers Federation qualified trainer
• Certified Family Dog Mediator®
• Member of the International Association of Canine Professionals

☀️ A note from Bowie about classes during summer ☀️

As the weather warms up, we'll be taking our usual summer break from regular classes.

Why?

Because the comfort and wellbeing of our dogs always comes first!

Our classes involve dogs resting in vehicles between searches, and keeping them safe and comfortable becomes increasingly difficult as temperatures rise.

And let's face it, searching in the Canberra summer heat isn't always much fun for us humans either.

We want searching to remain a positive, enjoyable experience for everyone — at both ends of the leash.

But that doesn't mean the sniffing has to stop!

Summer is a great opportunity to revisit foundation skills, enjoy some training at home, or explore online learning opportunities.

Our friends over at K9 Nose Time and The Dog Nose It are offering online training options and are taking expressions of interest now. Head on over and take a look!

Meanwhile, John and Amy will be busy planning an exciting 2027, and we'll be back with regular classes when the cooler weather returns, refreshed and ready for more sniffing adventures!

Because searching should always be fun 🤩

Entries are now open for our NW1 Trial on 28 November 📣 A birch ORT is the requirement to entry.

Head on over to the ACSW portal to secure your spot - https://app.mpev.au/members/

As always, we will need volunteers to help the day run smoothly. Please consider putting your hand up if you have a day, or few hours to spare.

The searching is brilliant, the food amazing and the fun never ending!!

A small update to our refund policy 🐾

Here at Canberra Nosework Training, we understand that life happens! Plans change, unexpected commitments arise, and sometimes you simply can't attend a class or event you've booked.

We will always honour refund requests made in accordance with our cancellation and refund policy, and we want to continue being as fair and flexible as possible.

However, moving forward, where a refund is requested due to a change of mind or a change in personal circumstances, and the refund is provided under our voluntary cancellation policy, the original non-refundable payment processing fee will be deducted from the refund amount.

Until now, we've absorbed these fees ourselves. Unfortunately, payment processing fees are generally not returned to us when we issue a refund, meaning we incur a cost even when someone is unable to attend.

This small change simply means that we won't be left covering those costs when a booking is cancelled. The deduction reflects the actual processing fee incurred by Canberra Nosework Training and does not apply where a full refund is required under Australian Consumer Law.

Of course, if we need to cancel a class or event, you will continue to receive a full refund, including any transaction fees.

This change will take effect from Monday 19 October 2026 and will apply to bookings made from that date onwards. Our cancellation and refund policies, along with our booking processes, will be updated to reflect this change and ensure the arrangements are clear at the time of booking.

We appreciate your understanding and your continued support of our little business. ❤️

I had an awesome day with some of the Scent Work folks in Perth, Western Australia. I love their enthusiasm and eagerness to learn so that they can be better handlers for their dogs. A huge thank you to everyone who attended, especially to those who brought a dog and put themselves out there so we all can learn together. A special thanks to Tracey O'Neil and Scent Work Club of WA for organising the workshop. ❤️❤️❤️

If you’ve started scent work with your dog and are thinking about trialling, you will have heard us talk about two different competition systems: Australian Canine Scent Work (ACSW) and Dogs Australia (ANKC).

In this Nosework Notebook post, we have a go at breaking down the differences, and what you should know before you head off to your first trial.

One reminder though - It's important to read and familiarise yourself with the rules and regulations of the organisation you are intending to trial under. Don't rely on this blog post alone 😉

*All odours are now available on the portal*

🐾 Comet would like to remind everyone that entries for our October ORT are now OPEN! 🐾

📅 Saturday 24 October 2026

An Odour Recognition Test (ORT) is your starting point for trialling with ACSW and a great first step into the world of Nose Work competition.

If you're new to trialling, please don't feel like you need to know how everything works before you enter! If you have any questions at all about the entry process, what happens on the day, or what you and your dog need to be ready for, please reach out.

We're always very happy to answer questions and help support you through entering your first trial.
