Spring can bring a lot more shedding as coats start changing with the warmer weather.

Regular brushing at home can help remove loose hair before it ends up on your clothes, couch and floors.

For dogs with thicker or shedding coats, a professional deshed can also help remove loose undercoat and make the coat feel much lighter and more manageable.

One of the biggest questions I start getting this time of year is:

“Should we go shorter now it’s warming up?”

And the answer really depends on your pup. 😊

I look at their coat, how easily it’s being maintained at home, their lifestyle and what you’re comfortable managing between appointments.

Sometimes a shorter style makes everything easier through the warmer months.

Other pups can stay a little fluffier if their coat is being brushed and maintained well.

There isn’t one perfect length for every dog.

The goal is always to keep them comfortable and choose something that works for you too. 🐾🤍

I think sometimes owners put a lot of pressure on themselves to get everything right at home.

You don’t need to. 🤍

You don’t need a salon-perfect finish.

You don’t need to know every grooming technique.

The goal is simply to keep your pup comfortable between appointments and recognise when something needs a little extra help.

Even learning how to brush the coat properly, check the common problem areas and use the right tools can make a huge difference.

The more confident you feel, the easier it becomes for you and your pup.

A lot of owners feel like they should just somehow know how to look after their dog’s coat.

But honestly, most people have never been shown. 🐶

Which brush should you use?

How do you know whether you’ve brushed all the way through?

Where do the knots usually start?

How do you brush legs, ears or the tail without it turning into a battle?

You don’t need to become a groomer.

But learning a few simple techniques can make maintaining your pup between appointments so much easier.

And that’s exactly why I offer one-on-one grooming lessons too. 🤍

One thing I really don’t want owners doing is repeatedly pulling a brush through a knot because they feel like they have to get it out.

If it’s a very small, loose tangle, you may be able to work through it slowly and gently.

But if it feels tight, sits close to the skin or your dog is becoming uncomfortable, please stop.

Trying to force it out can make brushing painful and can teach your dog to dislike being brushed altogether.

There is never any shame in bringing a knot to your groomer.

I’d much rather you leave it and ask me than turn coat care into a battle at home. 🤍

I completely understand loving that fluffy teddy-bear look. 🐶🤍

But one thing I always like owners to know is that keeping a longer coat does come with more maintenance at home.

It usually means more brushing, more combing and keeping a close eye on the areas that knot first.

And if that doesn’t fit into your life right now, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with choosing a shorter style.

Sometimes the best groom isn’t the longest or fluffiest one.

It’s the one that keeps your pup comfortable and makes caring for their coat realistic for you.

Spring means more time outside, which I absolutely love for our dogs. 🌼🐶

But it also means I start finding all sorts of little things hiding in coats. Grass, dirt, little tangles around the legs and sometimes half the park. 😂

After a big outing, give your pup a quick check once you’re home.

Have a look through their paws, legs, belly and anywhere their harness has been rubbing.

If the coat is wet or muddy, be gentle with it rather than pulling a brush straight through tangled areas.

Those couple of minutes checking their coat can help you catch little tangles before they become much harder to manage.

Enjoy the adventures. Just check the fluff afterwards. 🐾🤍

One of the nicest things you can do for a puppy is introduce grooming before they actually need a full haircut. 🐶🤍

You can start really simply at home.

Touch their paws.

Gently handle their legs and ears.

Brush for a minute or two.

Get them comfortable with having their face held.

Reward them when they settle.

We’re not trying to create a perfectly behaved grooming dog overnight.

We’re simply teaching them:

“These things happen, and I’m safe.”

Those tiny experiences can make such a difference when they eventually come into the salon.

Most owners know their pup needs a groom when they’re looking very fluffy. 😂

But there are often little signs before we get to that point.

You might notice brushing is suddenly taking longer.

You’re constantly moving hair away from their eyes.

Their paws are becoming fluffy underneath.

Or those little knots seem to be appearing much faster than they used to.

Those are all good signs that it may be time for a tidy-up.

Getting in a little earlier can often make maintaining the coat much easier for both you and your pup. 🤍
