Pocket City Farms Pocket City Farms is an urban farm and community and education hub in the heart of Sydney. Pocket City Farms is all about Fair Food, Education and Community.

Alongside growing local, fair food for everyone in our society, we're passionate about engaging the hearts and minds of communities, schools and businesses across Australia to protect and enhance the lands we call home. We do this by educating Australians to think more sustainability and build their resilience to climate change, sharing our knowledge of regenerative practices, permaculture, waste reduction, heat mitigation and water saving techniques. Pocket City Farms are working to bring urban farms to Australia’s unused city spaces. Pocket City Farms established in 2012 with the aim of establishing a model of urban farming that operates off three main pillars - growing local food, providing education and connecting community. We regard our Camperdown Farm as the first of many - we are working towards establishing or assisting multiple projects throughout Australian major cities. Our long-term vision is to see urban farming as a normal part of our society and urban fabric. Local sustainable food production close to where the bulk of our population live - and can connect with and learn from - is integral in securing a healthy future for our communities and our planet. Our model of farming is multidimensional – we balance growing local and organic produce with the goal of providing education on food and farming, and providing community connection through place and programs. Our first farm is nestled into our local neighbourhood in the inner west. Opened in June 2016, at Camperdown Commons, the farm has become a community hub where you can come and visit the productive ecological farm, pick up some super-local, chemical-free produce, get your hands dirty volunteering, take part in our composting and food forest programs, attend a range of workshops, events, and yoga classes, and bring your school, corporate or community group for a tour, talk or workshop. Importantly, the farm is a place to visit, enjoy productive green space in the city, dig your hands in the soil, and learn all about where exactly our food comes from and how it’s grown. The bowling greens have been converted into 1200m2 of market garden using organic practices to grow vegetables, herbs and salad greens. A greenhouse has been established to grow seedlings for the market garden and for sale to the public, and a 16m3 compost unit has been established for a composting program to turn over food scraps from the restaurants and cafes we supply. The street verge of the farm has also been planted out with edibles and is growing into a lush 180m2 food forest that provides free food for the local residents.

Mustard harvest at the Pocket 🌿

One of the things we love about mustard is how much it keeps giving.

We harvest the leaves while leaving the small baby leaf in the centre intact, so the plant can keep growing and give us another harvest. Once the plants are bigger and reaching the end of their cycle, we can also cut the whole plant and bunch it.

Once mustard starts flowering, the leaves usually become stronger in flavour and a little tougher. If you want the seeds, you can leave the plant to flower, form pods and dry out before harvesting them.

And while harvesting, we spotted a very colourful little caterpillar making itself at home among the leaves 🐛 another reminder to slow down, observe and notice who else is sharing the farm with us.

It’s a nice reminder of a couple of permaculture principles we come back to often: Observe & Interact, and Obtain a Yield.

Watch what the plant is doing, work with it, and take what you need while allowing it to keep growing.

Have you grown mustard before? 🌱

Big, small, wonky, colourful - there have been so many proud harvest moments at Pocket City Farms thanks to the hands of our amazing volunteers.

Beautiful produce full of life, love and nutrients as well as plenty of curious shapes and surprises along the way.

Every harvest looks a little different, and that’s part of the magic. 💚

Now we’re ready to see what October brings. Are you? 👀🌿

A little appreciation post for our rainbow chard. 🌈🌱

It’s given us plenty of bountiful harvests, brought a whole lot of colour to the farm and, of course, provided cooks that unique and slightly bitter flavour for their creations.

And because permaculture teaches us to observe and use what’s already around us, we thought we’d take some artistic inspiration from it visual beauty too!

Nature makes the best colour palettes! 🎨

🌱 Learning looks a little different on the farm.

Our school excursions get students out of the classroom and into the living systems around them, exploring how food, soil, water, plants and people are all connected.

From closed-loop systems and natural building to mulching, composting and feeding the chickens, learning happens through doing, observing and getting their hands dirty.

Are you a school looking for a hands-on learning experience?

Get in touch to bring your students to Pocket City Farms. 🌱

There’s something pretty special about our volunteer days.

🌱 Every week, people from our community give us their time, energy and plenty of helping hands. They come to learn a little more about regenerative agriculture, get their hands in the soil, share stories, meet new people and help us with the everyday work of keeping the farm growing.

We’re so grateful for all the people who keep showing up and sharing their time with us.
The farm wouldn’t be the same without you. 💚

Want to be part of it?
Our volunteer sessions run on Thursdays and Saturdays.

Book your spot through our website and come spend a couple of hours with us on the farm. 🌿

🌱 From the Pocket: Permaculture

Permaculture is at the heart of how we think about the farm, but it goes well beyond growing food.

It’s about observing the systems around us, understanding how things connect, and learning how we can be part of them.

Over the coming months, From the Pocket will explore the 12 permaculture design principles, one at a time, looking at how they show up in practice, here on the farm and beyond.

But first, the bigger picture.

Swipe through for an introduction to permaculture 🌱

Next up: Principle 1, Observe & Interact.

Friends of the Pocket:
🪶 Crested Pigeon

We share the farm with many more than just people.

Crested pigeons are native seed-eaters and regular visitors to the farm.
We support them by leaving the farm a little “messy”. They love eating the w**d seeds we leave behind, supporting us in turn.

And if you hear them taking off, listen closely. That distinctive “alarm” sound they make with their wings is produced by specialised feathers.

Just one of the many relationships that make up the biodiversity of the farm. 🌱

Who should we introduce next? 👀

A day at the farm can create space for connection, learning and giving something back. 🌱

We recently welcomed a group from benevolent_au to Pocket City Farms for a team retreat with a difference.

The participants were carers, many arriving without knowing each other. The day gave them some time for themselves: outdoors, hands in the soil, sharing conversations, laughs and new connections.

🌿Our Team Retreats can take different shapes, but they’re always about bringing people together through meaningful, hands-on experiences.

For organisations, they’re also an opportunity to step away from the screens and meeting rooms, volunteer together and contribute directly to the work of our community urban farm, while supporting social impact goals.

Get your team growing together. 🌱
