Chelseaโs Spinal Surgery Journey ๐พ๐
Just days after spinal surgery, Chelsea was able to stand and take a few assisted steps. Fast forward one week, and sheโs already walking away confidently and making incredible progress!
Chelsea underwent a hemilaminectomy, a surgical procedure used to treat Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD). During this surgery, a small portion of the vertebral bone is removed to allow access to and removal of the herniated disc material compressing the spinal cord.
What is IVDD?
IVDD occurs when the discs between the vertebrae degenerate or rupture, placing pressure on the spinal cord and causing pain, weakness, and sometimes paralysis.
Common causes of IVDD include:
๐ถ Genetic predisposition (especially in Dachshunds, French Bulldogs, Beagles, Corgis and other chondrodystrophic breeds)
๐ถ Age-related disc degeneration
๐ถ Sudden trauma or injury
๐ถ Obesity, which increases strain on the spine
๐ถ High-impact activities and repetitive stress on the back
Signs and symptoms of IVDD may include:
โ ๏ธ Back or neck pain
โ ๏ธ Reluctance to jump, climb stairs, or exercise
โ ๏ธ Weakness in the hind limbs
โ ๏ธ Wobbly or uncoordinated walking (ataxia)
โ ๏ธ Knuckling of the paws
โ ๏ธ Dragging the legs
โ ๏ธ Loss of bladder or bowel control
โ ๏ธ Paralysis in severe cases
Chelseaโs progress in just one week is fantastic to see, but recovery from spinal surgery takes time, patience, and ongoing rehabilitation. Weโre incredibly proud of how far sheโs come already and look forward to seeing her continue to regain strength and confidence. ๐
If your pet develops sudden back pain, weakness, difficulty walking, or paralysis, seek veterinary attention immediately. Early treatment can significantly improve outcomes.
