We’ve had this beautiful red tail black cockatoo staying for the past couple of days. It was found in someone’s water trough in a paddock. The water trough was only a quarter of the way full and this beautiful bird was stuck down the bottom with no way out. The bird was waterlogged and exhausted. After one night to dry out and one full day in the large outdoor aviary it had regained its energy and was successfully released this afternoon near its flock and they all flew off together. It was a really special way to end the year.
If you are leaving any body of water outside like water troughs for animals or if you have pools, PLEASE leave a stick or some sort of exit point for birds and smaller animals to be able to get out of the water once they enter.

A bit different to the usual stuff but this is Maggy. I got Maggy when she was just a tiny little calf and I have waited around 2.5 years for this moment. She finally had her own little baby! The baby is a girl and her name is Marge!! She is so cute!

A trial run with this new set up for Magoo.
If you’re new here Magoo is completely blind. So we do things a little different for her around here and we are still trying to work out the best set up for her.

I honestly don’t feel that she needs to be confined to a cage due to her behaviour so we have set this up for her in hopes that it will give us some more space in her room. Be a bit easier to clean the area as well as giving her more freedom.

Will see how it goes and keep you updated.

I just need to add more toys and some browse as well as her tub that goes under her food dish (she drops a lot of food)

I was surprised that she was not at all bothered by moving up onto this new space. She usually gets quite unsettled for a while if you move her to a new space (just figuring out where everything is located and working out if she is safe)
She was super chill moving into this. Although it is still in her room which she has been in since she arrived so it’s not a massive change for her.

As you can see she has become extremely trusting of us over time. She absolutely loves a good scratch! Doesn’t always want to step up which is fine. I don’t really make a point out of it. I ask and if she declines that’s the end of it. My main goal is to be able to touch her all over without her being worried about it.
Her old cage made it super hard for me to reach her for a step up as well so this new set up should be easier to interact with her.

She got sprayed for lice, nails trimmed and also a little treatment for some bumblefoot forming due to lack of movement and honestly I think her main perch that she chooses to always sit on is a bit too wide. It is my first experience with the condition so i am putting it down to mainly lack of movement as she is a little differnet to our other birds.
She has much more variety in perches now and i will be watching it closely to ensureit doesnt worsen.

I am also hoping this set up encourages her to move about some more. Which would help.

And for anyone wondering. She still has never made a peep except for one little squwark a long time ago.

Fully dismantled an old aviary at the house recently. This area will see new concrete poured for 2 aviaries as well as a sink and storage area. This old aviary will be fully restored for the lorikeets and the alexandrines aviary is also being fully redone and moved into this new area. Then i will be putting in gardens, a table and chairs by the aviaries and fully netting the whole area so i have a nice space to let the birds out and spend time with them. I can not wait until it is all finished!
