🦷Healthy Teeth at Home! Let’s Talk Pet Dental Care Products 🐶🐱

A professional dental clean is an important part of your pet’s oral health, but what you do at home matters too! 💙

There are lots of options to help keep plaque and tartar under control between dental checks, including:

🪥 Toothbrushing – Regular brushing is one of the best ways to remove plaque before it hardens into tartar. Pet-safe toothpaste and a toothbrush or finger brush can make this easier.

🦴 Dental chews – The right dental chews can help mechanically remove plaque as your pet chews. Always choose an appropriate size and product for your pet.

💧 Dental water additives – These can be a simple addition to your pet’s daily routine and may help reduce plaque and tartar build-up.

🍽️ Dental diets – Hill’s Prescription Diet t/d has a specially designed kibble texture that helps clean the teeth as your pet chews. It can be a great option for ongoing dental care.

🎁 A little something from us!
After every dental procedure at Southside Vet Surgery, your pet goes home with a FREE bag of Hill’s t/d to help you continue their dental care at home. 🐾

Remember, home dental care works best alongside regular veterinary dental checks and professional cleans when needed.

Not sure which option is best for your pet? Ask our team — we’re happy to help you find a dental routine that works for you and your pet! 🩵

🦷 What’s Included in a Veterinary Dental? 🐶🐱

Ever wondered what actually happens when your pet comes in for a dental procedure?

We’re taking you behind the scenes with Langley George to show you the different steps involved! 💙

🩻 1. Dental X-rays
Dental X-rays allow us to see below the gumline and assess the health of the tooth roots and surrounding bone — areas we can’t see just by looking at the teeth.

🦷 2. Extractions
If a tooth is damaged, diseased or painful and cannot be saved, it may need to be removed. Our goal is always to keep as many healthy teeth as possible while making sure your pet is comfortable.

✨ 3. Scale & Polish
We carefully remove plaque and tartar from the teeth, including around and below the gumline, before polishing the teeth to help create a smooth surface.

Dental disease can be painful, even when our pets continue to eat and act normally. Regular dental checks help us identify problems before they become more serious.

🩵 Healthy teeth = happier, healthier pets!

🦷 Dental Awareness Month – Did You Want Your Pet Smiling Like This? 😁

Bad breath isn’t just “dog breath” or “cat breath”— it’s often the first sign of dental disease.

By the age of 3 years, around 80% of dogs and 70% of cats have some degree of dental disease.

A professional dental procedure can remove painful plaque and tartar hiding below the gumline, helping your pet feel happier and healthier.
Lily & Carly use t/d dental care and have lovely teeth 🦷

🚨 Tick Paralysis Cases Are Still Happening – Even in Winter! 🕷️🐾

Our local 24/7 emergency hospital has seen a concerning number of tick paralysis cases over the last week, reminding us that ticks are a year-round risk in Cairns.

Unlike cooler parts of Australia, our tropical climate allows paralysis ticks to remain active throughout the year. Unfortunately, it only takes one tick to cause life-threatening illness in both dogs and cats.

✅ We strongly recommend keeping your pets on effective tick prevention every month, all year round—not just during the warmer months.

Some signs of tick paralysis include:
🐾 Weakness or wobbliness
🐾 Vomiting or retching
🐾 A change in bark or meow
🐾 Difficulty breathing
🐾 Collapse

If you notice any of these signs, seek veterinary attention immediately. Tick paralysis is an emergency, and early treatment gives pets the best chance of recovery.

Not sure if your pet is protected or due for their next treatment? Give our friendly team a call—we’re happy to help make sure they’re covered. 💙

Second Chances - A Story of Hope and Courage from a Husky Named Sai ❤️

“It’s been 17 weeks since my owner heard the words no family ever wants to hear.

I had lymphoma.

I didn’t understand what cancer meant, but I understood the look on his face. I saw the worry in his eyes, and I felt his hand gently resting on my head. Without a moment of hesitation, he made a promise.

He would give me every chance possible. No cost, no obstacle, nothing was going to stop him from fighting alongside me.

That’s when I met Dr. Alice.

With her kind soul, gentle heart, and endless patience, she started me on my chemotherapy journey. Alongside the incredible nurses at Southside Vets, I was never just another patient—I was treated with love, compassion, and hope.

The first treatments were hard.

I became sick as we left the clinic. For weeks I couldn’t control my tummy. I leaked. I had accidents. I felt tired all the time, and I wondered if I’d ever feel like myself again.

Not once did my owner get angry.

Instead, he held me close and whispered, It will get better.

When I didn’t have the strength to go on long walks, he even arranged for a dog walker to visit twice a day so I could still get outside and enjoy the fresh air.

He never stopped believing in me.

Then came Week 13.

I didn’t understand all the words the humans were saying, but I knew they were smiling.

My owner was overjoyed.

I was in remission.

Every difficult treatment... every upset stomach... every patch of fur I lost. Every day without the energy to play.

It was all worth it. Because I was given something precious.

More time. More walks. More cuddles. More adventures.

More memories with the person I love most.

Today, I’ve got my life back.

My fluffy coat is growing again, my energy has returned, and my Husky zoomies are back in full force.

I chase the wind, play with excitement, and greet each day with the same happiness I always had.

I don’t know how much time I have left.

None of us do.

But thanks to my owner, Dr. Alice, and every amazing nurse at Southside Vets, I have today.

And tomorrow, if I’m lucky.

My name is Sai.

And this is what a second chance looks like” ❤️🐾
