Clare lives on Bundjalung Country in Northern NSW with her dogs, Tex Perkins and Pip. Tex is a kelpie who likes baths and hates electropop. Clare has studied small animal and natural nutrition at the Holistic Animal Therapy Organisation and the College of Integrative Veterinary Therapies, and has spent the better part of a decade actively educating herself about nutrition and the pet food industry.

As someone who is clinically burnt out and under the care of multiple medial professionals to recover, while also running two companies and being the primary parent to a 3-year-old while neurodivergent, I feel this in my bones.

Your 100% might be someone else’s 75; some days my 100% is 10% of what others have in their tank and ✨SHOCKER✨ the last thing we need is more shame.

I realised about 2 years after I released my meal balancers that they are essentially the accessibility supports I need to be able to continue feeding my dogs a robust fresh food diet, while also keeping up with the high demands of my job and lifestyle (yes, having a kid is a lifestyle choice, I take full responsibility for it).

Not all of us have the same resources, whether that’s financial, capacity, education, emotional intelligence, time, or simply desire - and no amount of shaming people into performing in a certain way is going to change that. Rather than talking down to people who you perceive aren’t doing enough, offer them a hand to pull them up. We’re all doing our best, even when it’s not enough.

A simple dinner for my two kelpies last night.

I’m home alone this weekend, which is usually when I’d make more effort to prep my dog’s meals. But I’m in bed sick and it’s raining. I forgot to defrost dog food and didn’t want to go downstairs to the dog freezer because we don’t have internal stairs - I couldn’t even be bothered going outside to get the dog bowls, so they ate out of my favourite hand thrown bowls.

They had a big breaky so it was a small dinner of an egg each from our chooks, half a tin of mackerel in tomato sauce and 1/4 of one of our wild rabbit hide twists.

I didn’t actually buy mackerel in tomato sauce, they swapped it in my click and collect order. But I have no problem feeding these every now and then, because tomato is a good source of the antioxidant lycopene. Lycopene should be fed with fat for optimum absorption, so mackerel in tomato sauce is actually a great fit. They do have some sodium, but that’s fine because it’s an essential mineral and my dogs rarely eat added salt, and a bit of sugar but it’s only around 1% so that’s also fine.

I added some rabbit fur twist to each meal because this is a meal that I think would really benefit from some fibre, and fur is a great, species-appropriate source of insoluble fibre for digestive health. This is my favourite way to use our rabbit twists and I probably add fur to meals more often than I offer these as chews - although obviously they are great for that too! They’re huge so you get at least 4 big servings out of a twist.
