Cavaliers are prone to a condition called Syringomyelia, where the head is too small to accommodate the brain. It is this shape and size of the head that breeders have insisted on breeding into the dogs that is considered to be the cause of syringomyelia. Looking into turning this deadly and cruel condition around a group of breeders got their head together and decided to start the “The Spaniel Project”…....breeding a spaniel type of dog with all the characteristics of the friendly, playful, fun loving, people loving little dog but without the serious health issues. The only way to fix this is going to be out-crossing to bring some size back into these little dogs heads, a size that can comfortably accommodate their brain. This is going to be a process which is going to take some time, foundation stock has been purchased, health checks are being performed for as many issues that can be tested for at this stage. . All puppies from The Spaniel Project are sold fully vaccinated C5 6 weeks free insurance, de-sexed, microchipped and have a full vet check before they will be allowed to go to their new home. They also come with life long breeders support, return home policy and an online training course. BIN0000952686059

after a very long and dry spell the weather gods have let loose, not like some areas where there's been plenty of flash flooding and more on the way.....just over 75 ml here and more coming ...this atm is plenty the dogs think so anyway, wet, muddy paws and rain on their backs is not their favorite so lots of sleep on the daybed times :P

Eek. Are we still teaching this?
"Mum, can I pat the cute dog?"
"Sure, just reach your hand right out and let them sniff you first."

And it's not just children we've been teaching this to.
It's generational, and it's well and truly established as "how to greet a dog".

But somewhere along the way, we've confused letting a dog gather a bit more information with asking them to accept more physical contact from us.

Dogs don't need a hand presented to their face to smell us.
They really can smell us from metres away.

Do dog trainers disagree on this?
Yes.
Because yes, dogs can gather additional scent information by investigating things up close. I'm not disputing that
But I'm all for safety!
I see a wet floor, I'm gonna put a cone on it.
When I see hands reaching out towards an unfamiliar dog's face?
I'm going to say "please stop".

Because putting a hand directly into a dog's personal space can be the very thing that leads to a bite.

One thing is for sure, though.
Many dogs will choose to come closer to gather more information.
And yes, they can even do it when they're unsure about the person they're investigating.

A sniff doesn't mean an emotional connection has just been made.
It's not any sort of invitation.
And it certainly isn't proof of trust.

So how about we normalise keeping our hands by our sides?

And please, let's teach children a different way. Because this is one piece of advice that really doesn't need passing down to another generation

Diet is one of the biggest things we can control when it comes to our dogs' long-term health. Small changes to what you feed can add up over the years.
