Meet Frankie! 🐾

This tiny little Italian Greyhound came in for his vaccination and was quite possibly the cutest little patient we’ve had in our hands! 🥹

Frankie was so teeny, he practically fit in the palm of our hands. 🥰

Safe to say, we were all a little bit obsessed! 💚

Bird flu is making headlines, so Better Homes & Gardens asked Greencross Vets what it means for our pets.

Greencross Vets veterinarian Dr Nina shares practical advice to help pet parents understand the risks and take simple precautions.

“Bird flu can infect all mammals, so dogs, cats, rabbits and ferrets can all be infected.”

From avoiding contact with sick or dead wildlife to keeping cats indoors and dogs on a leash around wildlife, a few simple steps can help reduce exposure.

🖤 A majestic visitor who never should have needed a trip to the vet.

This beautiful black swan was found with a fishing hook stuck in its mouth - a painful and completely preventable injury caused by discarded fishing gear.

Removing the hook required a general anaesthetic, along with pain relief to keep this feathered patient comfortable while we treated them. 🦢

A reminder to all anglers: please take your fishing line, hooks and tackle home with you or use a designated disposal bin. The Victorian Fisheries Authority advises that old fishing line should be placed in bins, or if there are no bins available, taken home, cut up and disposed of in general waste. Their Seal the Loop program also provides dedicated bins for unwanted fishing line, hooks, netting and rope. (VFA)

Discarded fishing gear can cause entanglement, injury and even death to wildlife. A few extra seconds to dispose of your gear properly can make a huge difference. 💔

🎣 Fish responsibly. Dispose responsibly. Protect our wildlife. A big thanks for the wildlife careers for bringing this amazing swan in and thanks to our team for helping 🫶🏼

It is extremely important to check what your pet will need over the Christmas period and PLAN AHEAD.

You still have time to ensure you’ve arranged the following;

- Vaccinations are up to date
- Any food, medications, prescriptions, and preventatives are stocked up
- Any orders for these items already placed at your local clinic have been picked up

Whilst the Animal Referral Hospital will be open on Christmas Day and Boxing Day as all Greencross clinics in the Illawarra will be closed, they will be open for pet emergency consults ONLY. The ARH team will be unable to complete vaccinations, sell preventatives/medications/food that you’ve run out of, be available for you to pick up orders previously placed with Greencross, book appointments for Greencross.

Double check all of your pets foods and medications and if you don’t have enough to get you through the Christmas period, now is the time to call your local Greencross clinic to get these items.

We know this can be a very busy time for everyone and we want to ensure you aren’t stressed further by running out of these items on public holidays 🎄

10/11/2022

We know spring can bring lots of nasties around our pets like ticks, which can be fatal without prevention and treatment, so we are urgently warning of a serious risk to pets as tick anti-toxin serum is out of stock nationally, with limited supplies left in hospitals and stocks unlikely to replenish for another two weeks.
As a pet parent please ensure your pet is up to date with tick prevention today. The tick season is well underway with large numbers of paralysis tick cases presenting to vet clinics due to the wet and warm weather.
Ticks are more prevalent in bushy coastal areas which makes the Illawarra a perfect breeding environment for paralysis ticks.
If you think your pet may have ticks, this is an emergency and veterinary attention is required immediately.

🦷Ashley the cat had a secret and you won't believe what it was🦷

Ashely the gorgeous Burmese was booked in for a grade 2 routine dental at our Fairy Meadow clinic on 3/3/22 which included xrays. When Ashley was sedated vet Lauren found something very unusual inside her mouth and xrays showed us just how interesting it was.

Ashley had a condition called 'tooth gemination' of one of her lower teeth which means that one tooth had started to split in two (when she was a kitten) however had still stayed fused together. You can see in the xray that the tooth looks like it has 3 roots!

The tooth itself doesn't seem to have caused Ashley any issues so it was left as it was with a simple scale and polish around it but it was very interesting to see

🐁CUTEST PATIENT OF THE DAY IS REMI🐁

Handsome Remi the rat came to see us at our Fairy Meadow clinic last Friday for his desexing procedure. He was a star patient and the nurses loved giving him plenty of cuddles whilst he spent the day with us.

Remi has recovered well and returned home the same afternoon. He really was a delight and we look forward to seeing him in the future for his regular checkups.

The Australian Veterinary Association has shared a very important article during this incredibly busy time for the veterinary industry

We found the article very interesting and thought we would share it with you all 😊

Many veterinary clinics have experienced a significant increase in workload during the COVID-19 pandemic. Combined with requirements to meet health & safety guidelines to reduce the spread of COVID-19, and staff shortages, many clinics have struggled to keep up with the demand for services.

As we are all aware, restrictions have come back into place in NSW due to COVID19 and we are taking every measure possible to try and ensure that we remain open to help you and your pets.

Some measures that we have put in place are;

- Clients remaining outside and vets coming out to you
- Greencross WebVet is available for those clients who are self isolating and unable to come to the clinic with their pets at https://www.greencrossvets.com.au/webvet/
- We do have measures in place to see emergencies even if their family are isolating but we MUST be informed prior to arrival,

Operating in a contactless manner means that it is safer for clients and staff but may mean longer wait times.

We are seeing unusually high patient numbers due to some clinics in the area being closed due to staff contracting COVID19 and we appreciate your patience and understanding during this time.

Please be aware that due to isolation and close contact rules, we may need to change your appointment at short notice but we are doing our best.
