๐Ÿšจ๐Ÿถ NEW 2026 SCIENTIFIC REVIEW: DOGS EATING DRY KIBBLE MAY CONSUME 4 TIMES MORE ACRYLAMIDE, A PROBABLE CANCER-CAUSING CHEMICAL, THAN HUMANS!

And hereโ€™s the concerning part: There are no specific pet food safety limits for acrylamide!

๐Ÿ”ฌ A new review published in Frontiers in Veterinary Science examined chemicals formed during high-temperature pet food processing, including acrylamide and advanced glycation end products (AGEs).

HEREโ€™S WHAT THE RESEARCH REVEALS: ๐Ÿ‘‡

๐Ÿพ 4 TIMES MORE ACRYLAMIDE: Research estimated that dogs eating dry kibble may consume 4 times more acrylamide per pound of body weight than adult humans. Acrylamide is classified as a probable human carcinogen.

๐Ÿพ 75% LOWER BLOOD LEVELS: In a four-week dog study, dogs eating gently cooked fresh food had approximately 75% lower median blood AGE levels than dogs eating high-heat processed canned food.

๐Ÿพ CANNED FOOD ISNโ€™T EXEMPT: Another study found that canned pet food contained approximately 3.5 times more of one AGE marker (CEL) than dry kibble.

๐Ÿพ POTENTIAL HEALTH CONCERNS: Research in humans and laboratory animals has linked certain AGEs to inflammation, oxidative stress and chronic disease. Long-term effects in pets need more research.

๐Ÿพ NO SPECIFIC SAFETY LIMITS: Regulatory safety limits for acrylamide and AGEs in pet food have not been established.

โค๏ธ THIS IS NOT ABOUT SHAMING PEOPLE WHO FEED KIBBLE.

Millions of loving pet parents rely on kibble because itโ€™s affordable, convenient or their only realistic option.

Feeding kibble doesnโ€™t mean you love your dog any less.

But ultra-processed foods can come with chemical exposure concerns, and we shouldnโ€™t ignore them simply because these foods are widely used.

This review doesnโ€™t prove that kibble causes cancer. But it raises questions about food processing and the long-term effects of eating the same food every day.

OUR PETS DESERVE BETTER.

Better research. Better transparency. Better manufacturing practices. And science-based safety standards for chemicals created during pet food processing.

Because this isnโ€™t about judging whatโ€™s in someoneโ€™s bowl.

Itโ€™s about making EVERY bowl safer. โค๏ธ

Weโ€™ve actually had a couple of these little travellers here the past couple of days โ€ฆ.we hardly see moths anymore and these guys were a good size โ˜บ๏ธ

THEYโ€™RE NOT A PLAGUE. THEYโ€™RE RETURNING. ๐Ÿฆ‹๐Ÿ”๏ธ

Right now, millions of small brown moths are appearing across Sydney, the Hawkesbury, Illawarra and the South Coast.

Theyโ€™re covering walls, gathering around lights and finding their way into homes.

But before you reach for the spray, know what youโ€™re looking at.

These are Bogong moths, and their journey across Country is ancient.

For countless generations, Aboriginal peoples of south eastern Australia have known the arrival of the Bogong moth as part of the seasonal calendar.

Their migration signalled movement through Country towards the high mountains, where Aboriginal groups gathered for ceremony, trade, sharing knowledge, strengthening relationships and feasting on the moths.

Long before scientists tracked their migration, Aboriginal people knew where they travelled, when they would arrive and where they gathered in the mountains.

And then, frighteningly, the moths almost disappeared.

Before 2017, billions of Bogong moths made this migration each year. Following severe drought, their numbers crashed dramatically. Alpine caves that once held thousands upon thousands of moths became almost empty.

In 2021, the Bogong moth was assessed as endangered on the IUCN Red List.

So what some people are calling a โ€œmoth plagueโ€ may actually represent something worth celebrating.

The return of an ancient migration.

These tiny moths are extraordinary.

Weighing less than a gram, Bogong moths can migrate hundreds of kilometres from inland breeding grounds towards the Australian Alps.

Research has found they can navigate using the night sky and Earthโ€™s magnetic field.

Along the journey they feed on flowers, and when they finally reach the mountains they become an important food source for another threatened Australian animal, the mountain pygmy possum.

Everything is connected.

Country. Seasons. Moths. Mountains. Animals. People.

That understanding of connection sits at the heart of Aboriginal knowledge systems and caring for Country.

So if a Bogong moth lands at your place tonight, maybe look at it differently.

Turn unnecessary outside lights off so they can continue their journey.

Donโ€™t spray them.

If one comes inside, gently catch it and release it outside.

And if you see them, record your sighting through Zoos Victoriaโ€™s Moth Tracker to help researchers understand their migration.

Theyโ€™ve been making this journey across Country for thousands of generations.

Weโ€™re just watching them pass through. ๐Ÿฆ‹

Give the little travellers some space.

Theyโ€™ve got somewhere important to be. ๐Ÿ”๏ธโค๏ธ

May you never ever experience these conditions in your dog; they are utterly heartbreaking, and making the right decision to say goodbye is confusing and full of internal conflict.

I understand the platform I have, and I promised some people I would talk about Little Man when I felt like I could because learning about this condition and what it looks like at different stages can help you make decisions, especially the final one.

Via my clients, I have only ever seen these conditions in very long-lived dogs, but it is totally possible to see them in older (but not oooooollld) dogs.

Hearing and eyesight start to decline in many older dogs, and this may come at about the same time that some cognitive decline starts, so it's hard to differentiate sometimes.

Any anxiety that is new, including storms, is commonly linked to cognitive decline in older dogs.

More advanced signs can be things like finding your dog standing in a corner because they've gotten lost in the house. You may also find them randomly standing in a room; that's disorientation. We ended up putting an Apple Tag on Little Man's collar so we could find him in the house/yard if he'd walked himself into a corner.

Sleeping in places they've not slept before; any change to normal behaviour could be cognitive decline, but these things may also be related to pain - for instance, if your dog normally sleeps on the couch but now doesn't, then that may be related to them being in pain and not wanting to jump.

Losing another family member, whether that be animal or human can be the catalyst for cognitive decline in older dogs - families often report an event was the start of it all.

Being restless at night or even stressed at night - this may be sundowner syndrome.

Toileting in the house when that never was an issue before.

Forgetting that they've been fed and looking for more food.

Change in activity, walking in circles, pacing, not settling.

Forgetting/not able to do things they could do before - Little Man stopped being able to walk backwards, coordinate his limbs well like he used to be able to in his fitness work, and no longer able to do scent work.

On our walks in the end, he stopped sniffing and being enriched by his walks, he simply followed our leg to keep track of us.

Know that friends and family, and even your vet, don't live with your dog and are not experiencing what you are, so if someone downplays what you're experiencing, don't accept that. A local Vet we don't use often looked at Little and said he looked great and was aware of his environment. I asked them what "bad" looked like, and they said just sitting there, not moving, and not aware of their surroundings - I would never allow my dog to be that so there's that.

Deciding to say goodbye. Little Man had been pacing for a long time, but I could put him on a bed, and he would settle - he just needed some direction.

In the end, he would not settle even if you picked him up and put him with us; he'd just jump off and start pacing again, and you could see he was stressed - this is when we decided that there was little quality of life for him like this - if he was awake, he was pacing. Yes, he still ate and enjoyed his food, but there is more to life than that, especially for a highly food-motivated dog.

The tumour in his foot that made him lame previously, which we had removed, was coming back and was painful for him - there was no point in removing it when we were talking about quality of life.

Orthopedic pain had now really kicked in, and medication wasn't doing much other than making him wobbly and groggy.

His swallowing disorder - a part of old age was getting worse; his coughing and gagging were getting worse.

His heart though....amazing....this dog was not going to just go to sleep and not wake up.

He didn't get Sundowners, but he did wake up around 5-6am and start pacing. He didn't start soiling in the house.

Our decision to say goodbye took looking at what his life was like and asking ourselves what quality he was experiencing - still having pretty good mobility and eating was irrelevant to the question we were asking. If I were a human experiencing what he was, I'd want to pull the plug - his last week wasn't horrendous, and I was happy about that. There was no bucket list, though; in that last week, my attempt at it caused him stress, and that really was just another form of validation of where his brain was at.

Little Man was put to sleep at home by an at-home euthanasia service called Rest Your Paws. Little was sedated; he ate lots of treats whilst we waited for that to kick in, and then we said our goodbyes before he was given the final medication that would stop his heart.

That day, my heart absolutely broke; I feel like I'm on the edge of crying anytime I talk about him or think about him - he was my adventure buddy, my absolutely solid dog that I could trust with anything....except eating cat poo and cooked bones on his walks. He was universe-sent, and it was such a privilege to be his human for 15 of his 17 years on this earth.

My advice to those experiencing cognitive decline is be well-researched on what it looks like and check in with yourself often about what quality of life the dog actually has because cognitive decline is different from other conditions where quality of life can be a lot easier to assess.

๐Ÿถ DOG GETTING STIFF OR SLOWING DOWN? THIS COMMON KITCHEN SPICE HAS SOME FASCINATING RESEARCH BEHIND IT. ๐Ÿซš

In a peer reviewed randomized controlled study published in the Iranian Journal of Veterinary Surgery, researchers found dogs given ginger root powder had significantly lower levels of several inflammatory markers linked to cartilage degeneration and osteoarthritis formation.

But itโ€™s very important to remember that controlling inflammation is only half the battle: if you donโ€™t supply the raw materials for cartilage repair and maintenance, natural anti-inflammatories alone donโ€™t slow down the degenerative process .

๐Ÿ’œ Thatโ€™s exactly why, when Dr. Karen Becker formulated Mobility Matrixโ„ข, she wanted to support the whole mobility system including joints, cartilage, connective tissue, joint lubrication AND muscle.

Mobility Matrixโ„ข combines UC IIยฎ undenatured collagen, eggshell membrane, glucosamine, MSM and hyaluronic acid to support healthy joints and connective tissue, plus creatine to support the muscles aging dogs rely on to stay strong and mobile.

๐Ÿซš WANT TO TRY GINGER as a natural anti-inflammatory adjunct? In the canine study, dogs received 250 mg of ginger root powder for every 10 pounds, roughly โ…› tsp. (Check with your vet first, especially if your dog takes other NSAID medications).

Supporting mobility from multiple angles can make a big difference for our aging dogs. ๐Ÿ•๐Ÿ’œ

What if your petโ€™s food is delivering more than just nutrition?
Recent studies have detected microplastics in a surprisingly high percentage of commercial pet foods, including dry food sold in different parts of the world. Some of these particles are incredibly small, raising important questions about what happens after they enter the digestive tract.
And microplastics arenโ€™t the only concern. PFAS, or โ€œforever chemicals,โ€ have also been detected in the blood of dogs and cats. I donโ€™t want this information to make you panic. I want it to empower you. โค๏ธ
We can reduce unnecessary exposure with simple steps: store food properly, skip plastic bowls, reduce household dust and chemical exposure, provide clean water, and support the gut microbiome with fresh, species-appropriate nutrition.
Our pets already do an incredible amount of work every day to process environmental exposures. Letโ€™s give their bodies a little extra support wherever we can.
๐Ÿ”Ž I take a deeper look at where our pets encounter microplastics and PFAS, the fascinating connection with the gut microbiome, and practical steps you can take at home.
Read the full article (link in comments) and letโ€™s talk about protecting our pets in a world their bodies were never designed to navigate alone. ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿฑ๐Ÿ’š

A little garlic a day keeps the pests away ๐Ÿ˜Š

Youโ€™ve probably heard that garlic is toxic to pets, but science says otherwise. My latest article takes a closer look at the research, including the strong safety data on aged garlic extract in dogs and the science exploring its potential roles in:
โค๏ธ Cardiovascular health
๐Ÿฆ  Immune and antimicrobial support
๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ Antioxidant and detoxification pathways
๐Ÿฆท Oral health
๐Ÿœ Natural parasite and tick control
๐Ÿพ Inflammatory skin conditions
๐Ÿงฌ And even cancer prevention
A 12-week study in dogs found no adverse effects from aged garlic extract, even at doses substantially higher than typical supplemental amounts, and researchers observed increased activity of the Nrf2 antioxidant pathway.
Did you know that garlic is also a powerful parasite and tick repellent? Learn all about the safe use of garlic for pets in my latest article, link in comments ๐Ÿง„.
