CT scanning in rabbits with dental disease🐰🦷
🔹 Dental disorders are one of the most common problems in pet rabbits.
🔹 Rabbits have elodont dentition- their teeth continuously grow and erupt to compensate as the grinding surface is worn away throughout life. This predisposes them to dental problems.
🔹 Dental problems in rabbits can occur for a variety of reasons including genetics and trauma, but the most common cause of dental disease in rabbits is an inappropriate diet.
🔹 Good-quality grass or hay should make up 80% of a rabbit’s diet. When chewed, it acts like sandpaper, helping ensure optimal tooth wear and preventing overgrown teeth.
🔹 Common signs of dental problems include- reduced appetite and droppings, weight loss, drooling, discharge from the eyes, swelling on the face, and reduced grooming.
🔹 Initial diagnosis is based on history, clinical signs and oral examination.
🔹 CT allows for a more accurate diagnosis, generating 2D and 3D views for full skull reconstruction, enabling precise dental planning.
