✂️🐾 Welcome to the Academy!

This month we welcome Rachael, Charli, Emmerson, Xenophon and Kate to the grooming floor. They are studying the nationally recognised ACM30122 Certificate III in Animal Care Services (Pet Grooming).

With the knowledge already behind them, they’re now developing the hands-on skills of professional grooming. They’ll work on real dogs, learning to groom a range of coat types, breed styling and cross-breeds.

They are the future of the grooming industry, and we’re proud to be part of their journey. 💜

Welcome, everyone!

The dog learns it in one session. The owner takes three months.

That gap is the job.

You'll teach a clean, reliable behaviour inside twenty minutes. Then you hand the lead back, watch the owner reproduce about half of it, and realise the actual work is only starting.

Nobody warns you about this part. New trainers get learning theory, equipment and protocols — then get sent out to coach the most complicated species in the room with no framework for it.

Frustration wrecks more sessions than any dog ever has, and it usually belongs to the human. Timing isn't a concept people fail to grasp, it's a motor skill they can't yet execute under pressure. Knowing the difference is what makes you worth booking twice.

Why the best trainers are really coaches:
https://dogtraineracademy.com.au/why-dog-trainers-need-human-psychology/

The hardest part of dog training is not the dog. It is coaching the person holding the lead, and most new trainers are never taught how.

"Am I going to end up with a certificate I earned from a laptop, and no real ability to handle a dog?"

It's the question sitting underneath every enquiry we get about studying online, and it's a fair one. Plenty of online animal training never puts a lead in your hand.

Here's how ours actually works. The theory is online and self-paced, so you can study around a full-time job. The practical skills are taught in person, at a real training facility, with real dogs — that part can't be shortcut and we don't pretend otherwise.

Then you're assessed in your own training environment, over time, with a range of dogs, and specified tasks require video evidence that clearly shows you working with the dog. Not a quiz. Not a screen.

What's online, what isn't, where you need to turn up, and what to organise before you enrol:

Theory is online. Practical dog training assessments are not: they happen with real dogs, in your own training environment, on video. Here is how.

There is no licence to be a dog trainer in Australia.

No registration board. No protected title. Someone can finish a weekend workshop on Sunday and take paying clients on Monday, completely legally.

That surprises most people looking at this as a career — and it makes choosing where to study genuinely hard, because every provider sounds official.

But unregulated doesn't mean unrestricted. Animal welfare law applies to you personally the moment you handle someone else's dog. Training equipment that's legal in Queensland can be an offence in New South Wales. And the qualification itself is tightly controlled, even though the job isn't.

We've written up what actually governs dog training in Australia, what LIMA, force-free and balanced really mean, and the six questions worth asking any provider before you enrol.

Read it: https://dogtraineracademy.com.au/is-dog-training-regulated-in-australia/

Dog training is not a licensed occupation in Australia - but several sets of rules still apply. What aspiring trainers need to know before enrolling.
