🐾 National Microchip Month 🐾

This month is all about making sure our furry family members have permanent ID — because collars can slip off, but a microchip stays with them for life.

Here at The Cat Doctor Brisbane, we want to ensure the safety and well-being of your beloved pets. We always suggest that our clients microchip their pets.

Here's why:

🔒 It will allow your pet to be returned to you, should they become lost or stolen. Tags and collars can break off, but a microchip is safely under your pet's skin.

🏷️The devices are small, bio-compatible (allergy-proof), and don’t have any kind of battery or power source meaning no replacement or maintenance needed

💻 There are pet devices that can be programmed to respond to your pet's specific microchip, opening up a myriad of technological opportunities.

👮 Microchipping is a legal requirement in most states and territories across Australia

Today we remember the millions of stray dogs and cats around the world who don’t have a safe place to call home.

Every stray animal has a story — some were lost, some abandoned, some born on the streets. What they all deserve is compassion, care and a chance at a better life, just like the rest of us.

You can help by:
🐶 Supporting local rescue groups
🐱 Adopting instead of shopping
✂️ Desexing your pets to prevent unwanted litters
🥣 Donating food, bedding or supplies to local shelters/rescues
🏥 Reporting or helping injured strays so they can receive medical care

Even small actions can make a big difference.

Here are four different ways you can honour your kitty now and throughout the year:

🐾Respect your cat's hunter instincts- Use a feather string toy or robotic mouse to mimic the movements of a small animal.

🐾Respect your cat's need to scratch- Scratching helps your kitty stretch their muscles, mark things with their scent, and keep their claws in pristine condition.

🐾Respect your cat's desire for human interaction- Spend some extra quality time with them.

🐾Respect your cat's health- It's a great day to check your cat's veterinary records to ensure they're all up to date on vaccines and check-ups. Cats need to see a dentist and doctor as much as a human should, this is the time to check in.

Recently 'Patchi' came to see us for a dental and senior check up. Once we completed her blood test we found that she had a high T4 reading and was subsequently diagnosed with hyperthyroidism.

Hyperthyroidism in cats is caused by an excessive production of thyroid hormone by the thyroid glands situated in the neck, leading to an overactive metabolism.
Common symptoms include increased appetite, weight loss, drinking and urinating more, fast heart rate, restlessness or hyperactivity, vomiting or diarrhoea and, poor coat condition. It can lead to serious complications if left untreated.

Patchi is now living her best hyperthyroid life and your kitty can too! If you notice any of these symptoms in your cat, don't hesitate to give us a call on (07) 3544 6828 and see our vet today!

We recently had 'Bonito' visit us at The Cat Doctor Brisbane for a scale and polish on his teeth. He made himself very comfy in his cage and was a good boy at the vet.

All cats will need ongoing home care to maintain the cleanliness and freshness of their teeth as they aren't able to regularly brush their teeth like us.
It is recommended to brush their teeth on a regular basis to reduce plaque build up.
If your cat isn't used to their mouth being touched or you are unable to brush their teeth other options include adding in a dental diet, water additives, teeth gels or powder in their food.

Some dental foods you can incorporate into their diet include Hills Oral Care, Hills t/d and Royal Canin Dental. Natural foods such as raw chicken wings and necks and strips of tough chewy meat can also be effective but they do come with some risks.

There is also a gel that you can place on the teeth to aid in the control of plaque while also maintaining a fresh breath.
Another option is a powder that you can place in food or treats which works by being absorbed through the bloodstream once eaten. This powder helps reduce bad breath, plaque, and tartar.
