Did you know Australia is home to over 60 species of native rodents? 🐭🌿

Meet the Bush Rat, the Rakali (Australia's only native water rat), and the Swamp Rat. These clever native critters play a big role in our ecosystem, dispersing seeds, aerating soil, and providing food for native predators like owls and quolls.

Native rodents are often mistaken for introduced pests, but they look and behave quite differently. If you find an injured or orphaned native rodent, pop on some gloves, scoop it gently into a cotton pillowcase, and get it to a wildlife hospital, vet, or your local rescue group as soon as possible.

Every native animal matters, even the small, overlooked ones. 💚

Plight of the Possums... 🦫
RAWR have been innundated the past few weeks with Winter Possum tragedies -

- Car, dog, cat attacks.
- Rodenticide poisoning.
- Human intervention with feeding toxic foods.
- Orphaned babies found on ground from sick mums no longer able to care for them.

Tragic beyond belief 😥

Last night we were called to capture this beautiful boy with advanced Dermatitis. Blind and nursing sores around and underneath his body, it was an excruiating life of pain he was living.

His only life line was the Resident feeding him each night, not realizing his little body was beyond repair and he needed a pathway across the Rainbow Bridge as soon as possible.

Thankfully we were sent a photo of his face for advice, allowing us to act immediately and capture him.while feeding. An emergency dash to Aust Zoo Hospital ended his pain quickly, placing him at rest.

Please be alert of the Wildlife around you - if their making themselves seen and hanging around they could be asking for your help.

Take a photo.
Send to an experienced Wildlife Group for assessment and allow them to take it from there

If we all work together our Wildlife have a chance of survival in this destructive phase our environment is experiencing.

One of our most important Snake Species in SE QLD is the valuable Keelback 🐍.

Non Venomous. Harmless. And best of all - A toad Eater. Yes! You read this right. They assist in the clean up of our Cane Toad issue.

A freshwater snake living around creeks, dams & rivers. If left alone, they contribute enormously to eradicating this invasive species

Sadly some mistake it for the venomous Eastern Brown, ending its life. Hence why knowing your local Snake species is vital to saving our ecosystem.

A sad day for Karla in Banyo today 😪. Her beloved resident Brushtail Possum, Sweetie, was rescued and humanely put to sleep 🦦.

Karla adores her Wildlife and treats her resident possums with genuine appreciation and respect. She’d even set up a cosy box in her shed for Sweetie offering a safe place to sleep and a nightly treat before Sweetie headed out on her evening food run.

When Karla noticed a red lump developing, she contacted RAWR for a welfare check. Our concern was either a tumour or a pr*****ed bowel. Either way, Sweetie needed urgent medical assessment.

The diagnosis confirmed a cancerous tumour. Sweetie was euthanised to prevent the painful and inevitable decline she would have otherwise endured.

It’s s blessing meeting Residents who live in harmony with their Wildlife, yet traumatic seeing them lose an animal they’ve bonded with so deeply. Sweetie was aptly named - she had a beautiful, trusting nature.

Thank you Karla for being a friend and support to your local Possum Community. Sweetie was blessed to have your generosity, care, and hospitality. 🌹

RAWRS' Possum Project Girls💃 were in full swing this week installing Boxes to provide homeless Brushtails a 2nd chance in life after their habitats were destroyed for development.

Our sweet, beloved little boy Andre, who spent time in RAWRS care from injuries, was adopted by the wonderful Laura in Burpengary to live in her wildlife friendly backyard.

Andre has been awarded his own tree house with lagoon views and two female brushies for neighbours.

We're thrilled to have found Laura. She loves her precious Possums and understanding their vital role in our ecosystem, has dedicated her native flora yard to help maintain their deminishing existence in her area. 🌷

Andre is one of the few lucky survivors of habitat destruction and after what he's been through its a blessing he's scored such a lovely, caring Landlord 🌿. He's a gentle little boy and we'll miss his gorgeous big brown eyes and eskimo kisses each night.

RAWRS' Possum Project Team - Wildlife Trainer & Carer Anne, Ecologist Alison & Vet Nurse Hannah - dedicate their own time and funds building a brighter future for Brushtails.

RAWR received a call last night from Karen & Jack in Kurwongbah with concerns for a troubled Eastern Grey spotted roadside. 🦘.

Karen’s photos showed severe emaciation and a kangaroo in need of urgent medical attention. Macropod rescues require specialised responders, so RAWR reached out to WRQ — our incredible go‑to team for injured kangaroos.

Day or night, they track down distressed macropods to offer emergency assistance.
With habitat destruction around Moreton Bay increasing rapidly, these beautiful families are being ripped apart with numbers decreasing weekly from car strikes, pet attacks, their homes destroyed & environmental issues.

We're grateful therefore to have caring Residents like Karen & Jack watching out for our Native friends and the WRQ Trauma Team on call to attend.

Thank you to all for your dedication in saving these magnificent Animals. Macropods are often left on roads suffering great pain for hours until they die. Its devastating for the Rescue Teams seeing this so often. Our duty as a caring community is to give them the respect they deserve by assisting quickly in whatever method required to ease or end their pain. 💚

When our President received the call from B105’s Melbourne Head Office, they shared how impressed they were by RAWRS' dedication, rescue stories and passion for protecting Wildlife & Australias' environment. Being chosen alongside much larger community and sporting groups is an honour we don’t take lightly.😊

We’re incredibly grateful, humbled and energised to keep doing what we do. 🐍🦎🐢🐸🦦🦔🦅

And as it turns out… size doesn’t matter — it’s how you use your passion and dedication that counts 💕😊
