The work starts before deployment.

For a working dog, preparation isn’t just about having the right equipment ready.

It’s about having a recovery plan ready before you need it.

Frozen packs. Harness loaded. Ready to go.

Because when the work is unpredictable, preparation shouldn’t be.

Freeze. Load. Go.

Dogs only need cooling after they’ve finished working.

It’s a common belief, but it’s only part of the picture.

Working dogs generate heat long before the job is over. That’s why managing body temperature between deployments, training sessions or periods of intense activity matters just as much as recovery afterwards.

At Shepherd, we believe recovery isn’t something you think about at the end of the day.

It’s part of performance from the very beginning.

Because when our dogs give us everything they’ve got, they deserve the same level of preparation we expect from ourselves.

Meet Matt and Iggy.

Every Shepherd product starts with real operational experience.

Matt has spent years working police dogs in Queensland, seeing first-hand the physical demands placed on these incredible animals.

Shepherd wasn’t created in a boardroom. It was built from the challenges faced by working dog handlers who wanted a better way to help dogs recover and perform.

That’s why every design decision has a purpose.

20 minutes.

That’s how quickly heat stroke can take hold in a working dog under the wrong conditions - and most handlers don’t catch it until it’s already underway.

The early signs are behavioural, not obvious: subtle stumbling, slower responses, heavier panting than the work level would suggest. By the time it’s visible, the dog is already in trouble.

This is exactly why active cooling matters. Not as an accessory - as a necessity for any dog working in the heat.

The Shepherd Australia Tactical Cooling Harness was built by a 16-year K9 handler who has seen this risk firsthand.

Every shift starts the same way.

A 16-year K9 handler. A dog that knows the routine. And a cooling harness that goes on before the dog even steps out of the vehicle.

No shortcuts. No exceptions. Just the quiet discipline that comes from doing this job properly, every single time.

The Shepherd Australia Tactical Cooling Harness is part of that routine — because protecting a working dog starts before the work does.

Heat stroke in dogs can occur in under 20 minutes.

By the time the signs appear — heavy panting, stumbling, floppy tongue, unresponsiveness — the dog is already in serious danger. And for a working dog mid-deployment, the window to act is even smaller.

A Queensland police dog named Fox nearly died on shift from heat stroke. His handler searched for something — anything — that could keep a working dog cool while it was still working.

Nothing existed.
So he built it.

From a raw prototype to a patented, field-tested cooling harness now trusted by QLD Corrections, NT Police, NSW Police, and working dog handlers across Australia and the USA.

The Shepherd Australia Tactical Cooling Harness exists because of one near miss.

Don’t wait for yours.

This just made our day. 🐾

is based in Western Australia - where the heat is no joke, and has just started running his working dog in the Shepherd Australia Tactical Cooling Harness.

His verdict: “a great piece of kit.”

This is what Shepherd Australia was built for. Real working dogs, real conditions, real handlers who demand gear that actually performs.

Thank you for the kind words and for trusting us with your dog. We love seeing our harnesses out in the field — especially in WA heat.

“Won’t the black make the dog hotter?”

We get this question a lot — and it’s completely understandable.
Black does absorb radiant heat from the sun. That part is true.
But working dog heat stroke doesn’t work the way most people think.

The real threat is metabolic heat, the heat a dog generates internally from physical exertion. A working dog can reach dangerous core temperatures in full shade, on a mild day, if they’re working hard. Sun exposure is almost irrelevant by comparison.

So what actually helps?
Active heat removal. Not shade. Not a lighter coloured vest.

The Shepherd Australia Tactical Cooling Harness uses 3 frozen gel packs positioned against the sides and chest, actively drawing heat away from the core while the dog works. The open back design keeps airflow moving so heat can escape rather than build up.

The colour of the harness has nothing to do with it. The mechanism does.

Invented by a 16-year Queensland Police K9 handler. Patented. Field tested. Trusted by QLD Corrections, NT Police, NSW Police and working dog handlers across Australia and the USA.
