I’ve always believed that great design often comes from real-life experience… and PetXplorer crates are no exception.

Back when I bred and exhibited Persian and Exotic Shorthair kittens for over 13 years, a large number of my kittens travelled interstate and overseas to their new homes. I spent a lot of time at airports — often nervously — waiting for updates that they had arrived safely.

One day, I had two beautiful kittens being flown out of Brisbane at the same time… one heading to Perth and one to Sydney. One was a fluffy Colourpoint Persian, and the other an Exotic Colourpoint Shorthair.

Both were in standard blue and white airline crates available at the time.

After a long day of travel (and a very long wait), I finally received the calls from their new owners… both saying they had received their kitten and were completely in love.

All good… until something didn’t quite add up.

The Sydney owner had received the fluffy Persian… and the Perth owner had received the Exotic Shorthair.

The only problem? That wasn’t the plan.

The kittens had been switched at the airport onto the WRONG planes.! 😮

What followed was a very long and very stressful second leg of travel across the country for both little travellers (and some very relieved — and slightly shocked — new owners at the other end!).

It was one of those moments that really stuck with me.

Not just because of the mix-up… but because it highlighted how important it is for pet travel equipment to be clearly identifiable, safe, and designed with real-world handling in mind.

That experience — along with many others over the years — played a big part in the development of PetXplorer crates.

Today, every PetXplorer crate is designed with:

🚨 IATA crate rules update – here’s what pet owners actually need to know.
Everyone’s talking about “19mm x 19mm openings” for cats… but that’s only part of the story.
The real requirement?
👉 Openings must be nose and paw proof to prevent injury.
And here’s the problem 👇
Focusing purely on a 19 x 19 square misses the entire point of the regulation.
At PetXplorer, our crates are engineered differently:
✔ Designed to reduce paw & claw entrapment
✔ Shaped openings that limit access where it matters
✔ Superior airflow for safer travel
Yes—one dimension may exceed 19mm.
But the overall opening design is smaller and safer in real-world use.
💡 So here’s the question you should be asking your pet transporter:
Are you focused on a number… or on actual animal safety?
Because a rigid 19 x 19 interpretation doesn’t automatically mean safer—it just means simpler.
We’re actively working with IATA to help modernise the wording so it reflects smarter, safety-first design.
Until then, acceptance may vary between transporters—so always check.
