New puppy checklist for week one at home, minus the panic.
The first week is less about training and more about turning the volume down. Start small: a pen or one room with a soft bed, water and a couple of toys beats handing a tiny dog the run of the whole house. Expect the first night to be loud, because they have just left everything they knew, and put their bed close enough that they can hear you. Then protect the naps. Puppies sleep most of the day, and an overtired pup turns into a small land shark with teeth. Build the routine early, the same door and the same patch and the same two words every single time, so the pattern does the teaching for you. Chewing is not naughty either, it is a phase with a solution, so keep something better within reach and swap instead of scold. And meet the world in small doses, one new sound or surface a day, always letting them choose to walk towards it. Week one is the foundation, not the finish line.
