We’ve disrupted a Sydney wildlife trafficking ring in our first major operation targeting this illegal trade.

During a search warrant, we recovered:
• 36 reptiles including snakes and lizards
• silver and gold bullion and cash worth $300,000.

The reptiles have been saved from the cruel international wildlife trade.

We are just getting started.

The National EPA is targeting wildlife crime as a compliance priority and the individuals involved will face the full force of the law.

We’re working with our domestic and international partners to dismantle wildlife trafficking networks and to remove the financial gains made from this crime.

It is with heavy hearts that we share the news that beloved Radiated Tortoise, Bowser, was humanely euthanised this week.

Bowser had been living with a longstanding medical condition related to his traumatic past as a victim of the illegal wildlife trade prior to being rescued and rehomed with us. After careful consideration, the veterinary and animal care teams at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary made the compassionate decision in the best interests of his welfare.

Bowser was a true ambassador for this Critically Endangered species and was deeply loved by everyone at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary.

He will be greatly missed by the team, guests, and the wider conservation community.

Yoshi, Peach, Toad and Donkey Kong will continue the legacy of education and awareness of the impact of Wildlife trafficking at the Tortoise Village habitat.

Disheartening news! Three highly specialised cameras and equipment used to monitor Rosenberg’s Goannas in the Ainslie – Majura Nature Reserve as part of our goanna project have been stolen.

The equipment worth nearly $4,000 was taken from a goanna burrow dug into the side of a trail in the reserve and from a nearby tree.

The thief would be unable to use the cameras because a PIN is needed to operate them. The installation included a sign with a photo of a goanna, the purpose of the project, and the contact details of the project team leader.

Fortunately, the burrow itself appears unharmed.

The burrow is known as ‘Love shack burrow’ to some people because of the goanna mating activity that has been recorded on camera there.

The NPA goanna project has been running for 8 years. Its aim is to improve understanding of genetic relations, habitat use and movements of Rosenberg’s goannas (Varanus rosenbergi) in Namadgi National Park and the Mt Majura – Mt Ainslie area.

This species of goanna is found only in southern Australia, but its population is threatened by habitat loss and predation.
