Meet Loki and Bonnie who were in visiting us this week for their annual vaccinations and health checks.
🐱 These beautiful guys are SIBERIAN CATS - Fluffy, majestic, and surprisingly athletic ❄️

Originating from the snowy forests of Russia, Siberians are one of the oldest natural cat breeds in the world. Their thick triple-layer coat helped them survive harsh winters, but don't let all that fluff fool you – these cats are incredibly agile and love to jump, climb, and play.

✨ Fun Fact:
Many people with cat allergies report fewer symptoms around Siberians. While no cat is truly hypoallergenic, Siberians often produce lower levels of the Fel d 1 protein, which is the main allergen found in cats.

❤️ Pros of Owning a Siberian:
• Affectionate and family-friendly
• Generally gets along well with children and other pets
• Intelligent and playful well into adulthood
• Quiet compared to many other breeds
• Stunning, luxurious coat

⚠️ Things to Consider:
• Their thick coat requires regular grooming to prevent matting
• They can be quite large, with some males reaching 8–10kg+
• Highly social and may become bored if left alone for long periods
• Excellent climbers – don't be surprised to find them on top of your fridge!

No, Your Pet Shouldn’t Smell Like Corn Chips!

That funny popcorn/corn chip smell from your dog’s paws,
it’s usually caused by yeast and bacteria building up between the toes.

A mild smell can be normal… but strong odour, licking, redness, or brown staining can signal:
• Allergies
• Skin infections
• Moisture trapped in fur
• Yeast overgrowth

Winter weather can make it worse because paws stay damp for longer after rain and morning grass.

If your dog constantly licks their feet, it’s worth getting checked — because most pets don’t stop until they’re REALLY uncomfortable.

The Most Dangerous Thing About Winter Might Be Your Heater or Fireplace

Every year we treat pets with:
🔥 Burns from lying too close to heaters
🔥 Burns from pets jumping on your fireplace
🔥 Heat packs chewed open
🔥 Electric blanket accidents
🔥 Cats sleeping inside dryers or warm washing baskets

Pets LOVE warmth… but sometimes a little too much.

Quick winter safety reminders:
• Keep heaters blocked off where possible
• Never leave heat packs unattended with pets
• Check your dryer before turning it on
• Avoid electric blankets for unsupervised pets
• Provide warm bedding away from direct heat

Cats in particular are basically tiny heat-seeking missiles this time of year. 😼

🍂 Your Dog’s Not Lazy… It Might Just Be Winter.

As the colder weather rolls in, we see a big increase in stiff joints, slower walks, and pets struggling to get comfortable — especially our older dogs and cats.

Signs your pet may be feeling the cold more than usual:
• Reluctance to jump or use stairs
• Sleeping more than normal
• Limping after rest
• “Grumpy” behaviour when touched
• Slipping on tiled floors

Winter can make arthritis and joint pain flare up just like it does in people.

The good news? There are lots of ways we can help keep them comfortable through the colder months — from pain relief to joint support plans.

Tiny kittens. Big entrance into the world. 🐾✨

These beautiful Burmese kittens made an unexpected arrival on Tuesday via emergency C-section here at Highlands Veterinary Hospital.

Fun fact: Mum is what’s known as a “chocolate” Burmese — and these little ones will be too! 🍫🐱 Right now their coats are much lighter, but over the next few weeks their beautiful chocolate colouring will gradually develop and deepen as they grow.

We’re happy to report that both mum and babies are doing very well and settling in beautifully. 🐱💕
