Dental Disease - It’s More Than Just Bad Breath 🐾🦷
Did you know that by just 3 years of age, nearly 80% of dogs and 70% of cats have some form of periodontal disease?
Dental disease can be easy to miss because much of the problem can be hiding below the gumline. Signs can include bad breath, red or bleeding gums, tartar build-up, difficulty eating, dropping food or changes in behaviour.
Regular dental checks are important because untreated dental disease can cause chronic pain, infection, loose teeth and damage to the tissues and bone supporting the teeth. Oral disease can also have effects beyond the mouth and has been associated with changes affecting organs such as the heart, kidneys and liver.
🐶🐱 How can we help?
Our dental care can include:
• A thorough dental examination and charting
• Dental X-rays to check the tooth roots and structures hidden below the gumline
• Professional scale and polish to remove plaque and tartar
• Dental extractions when diseased or painful teeth cannot be saved
• Local anaesthetic and ongoing pain relief when required to keep your pet comfortable during recovery.
Regular dental checks allow us to identify problems earlier, often before your pet shows obvious signs of discomfort.
Healthy mouth, happier pet! If you’ve noticed bad breath, tartar or changes in the way your pet eats, ask our team at Bowral Veterinary Hospital to check their teeth at their next visit 🪥
