30 mins is enough for most dogs and puppies but we do offer 45 mins sessions as well for those that want a little extra.

I grew up with dogs fighting and thinking that was normal, “They’re just dogs, they’ll sort it out”. It’s not normal and it can create a lot of damage.

Maple is relentless at the moment, if she is awake she is causing mischief any opportunity she gets and the older dogs do not appreciate it. If I allowed her to play with Wally (our visitor dog) this would make for a very stressful stay for him, never getting a moment to relax, feeling like he has to defend himself from the little land shark he’s living with for the next couple of weeks and I could end up with a puppy who has had a negative experience with an adult dog, which could lead to a lot of other problems down the track like reactivity, dog aggression, lack of confidence just to name a few. This also doesn’t teach her manners or boundaries around other dogs, which is super important if you want your dog to be social around other dogs.

Wally wasn’t a fan of Maple to start with, he’s slowly warmed up to her and enjoys playing with her in small doses and he’s very gentle with her. In this little snippet you can see Wally look up at me a couple of times, as if to say “a little help please” this is my cue to call Maple away from him and advocate for Wally so he doesn’t need to intervene.

Maple is a little too interested in dogs for my liking at the moment, so my priority is to teach her how to tone it down a little, so she doesn’t get herself in trouble unexpectedly. I choose dogs for her to interact with wisely so I don’t put her in situations she can’t handle and we are working on that name recognition so I can get her attention when I need to.

It’s up to us to teach our puppies how to interact with other dogs. If you’re not sure what appropriate play looks like or you’re just having a hard time managing the little piranha you’ve just let run havoc in your life, I get it, even as a dog trainer, my puppy can be overwhelming at times but I can help you create more peace in your home so you’re not in a constant state of “wtf have I done” 😳😂

Billie has come along way, we’ve mostly done walk and trains with her but now we’re getting mum involved so I can teach her the skills Billie has learnt during with me.

I’m super proud of this little team, Billie was always on alert even when there wasn’t much happening around her. She’s starting to sniff on her walks instead of scanning everything and has much more neutral body language, still a little heightened around other dogs but is making more and more good choices and is able to go back to a neutral state of mind much more quickly.

A dog in a state of constant over arousal is not a healthy state of mind, building neutrality around,l dogs, people, other animals and novelty things is a great skill to teach your dog.

Did you just get a puppy and now you’re wondering if they accidentally gave you the spawn of Satan instead of the cute, sweet little baby dog you thought you were bringing home? 😂😂😂

Welcome to puppyhood.

I see you. I’m living it right now too, but I knew exactly what I was signing up for. Even though I currently feel like I’m in a toxic relationship with a four-legged little bully (pun intended), I absolutely adore her and will do whatever it takes to help her grow into a well-adjusted little lady.

It all takes time, but one of the biggest things you can do is give your puppy opportunities to chill the f@&k out. That usually means having a few setups where both you and your puppy can have some space. Chances are they need a break from you too, they just don’t know it yet.

The first setup is a playpen with a crate and bed inside. We’ve made the whole area a comfy little space where Maple can play, nap, chew on toys, and generally entertain herself when we can’t supervise her. Sometimes I put her in there while I get things done around the house, and other times she chooses to go in there herself. I’ve also noticed after her failed attempts of trying to make Bob play, she’ll give up and go in there to have a play. More often than not, we’ll find her curled up asleep after a little play session.

I know this setup won’t last forever. In a few weeks she’ll probably attempt to launch herself over the pen, but for now it’s working beautifully.

Her second setup is her crate. This is where she sleeps overnight and has most of her daytime naps.

Fun fact: puppies need around 15–20 hours of sleep every day.

I’ll never understand people who think crates are cruel. At just 9 weeks old, Maple will often put herselfee in her crate when she’s tired. Crate training can be incredibly helpful for toilet training, teaching independence, helping puppies learn how to switch off, and giving them a safe space that’s theirs, not to mention, it helps prepare your puppy for vet or groomer visits and times where they may need crate rest after any surgery or injury they may have over there life.

This is Billie, I’ve been doing walk and trains with her for the last 3 months and she’s come along way in that time. Billie’s mum needed a little extra hand due to doctor’s orders. She had done the right things and had taken her to puppy and obedience classes and wasn’t getting very far and Billie had failed to move up to the next class.

To be honest, knowing Billie, an obedience class would have been far too distracting for her and I think it’s unfair to fail a student when there was no way to set them up for success with so many dogs around. The methods also weren’t working for this team as Billie isn’t that food motivated and probably needed someone to show her how to use toys as motivators and the use of different training equipment.

These are the things we do differently at TIA. We work with the dog in front of us and use appropriate techniques for that dog. Billie still has a lot to learn but she’s still young and we’re slowly building up food motivation and using play to decrease her reactivity.

We have just recently had our first 1 on 1 with mum now that she’s feeling up to doing more with Billie. This is the side of the equation that really helps so I can then transfer the skills Billie has learnt with me to her mum so she can then follow through with her training, this gives Billie more consistency and clarity.

Training walks in conjunction with 1 on 1s can be super helpful for your dogs training journey and helps really cement those skills.

Today marks our first week with Maple and boy are we in for a ride with this little pocket rocket 🚀

Maple has had a busy week full of fun, learning, exposure and lots of napping. These next couple of months are super important for her to have lots of different experiences. The first 16 weeks is a huge developmental milestone for our young pups so exposing Maple to lots of different sights, sounds, surfaces and environments, safely of course, will do her a world of good. What we won’t be doing is waiting until she’s had all her vaccinations to get her out and about.

How to safely socialise your pup until fully vaccinated:

🐾Take them to different places but don’t put them on the ground if it is a high dog traffic area.

🐾Organise play dates with trusted friend’s or family’s dogs that are fully vaccinated and have a good nature and temperament (be careful with the dogs you let into your dog’s life, one negative experience can have lasting effects on your dogs behaviour and confidence)

🐾At home, find things you can use as different surfaces for your puppy to walk across like a tarp, a wobble board, roofing materials (make sure there’s no rusty nails or anything hazardous in them), plastic shell pools, etc.

🐾Introduce them to different noises, if there’s fireworks or thunder, play with them indoors or do something fun with them.

A little break from Maple spam. We have Wally the Weimaraner staying with us for nearly 3 weeks, he and Bob are enjoying each other’s company and steering clear of the little terrorist in the house 😂
