If you answered A or B, we can teach you the skills to have that cafe dog that people go “wow, what a well behaved/sweet/calm dog you have, my dog could never do that” or in Maple’s case “it’s the famous cafe dog”, yep, someone said that to us today, I had no idea I was walking around with a celebrity 😂🥰

It also might surprise you to know but not everyone at the cafe are dog people 😲 I know, I’m as shocked as you are, but if we want our cafes to remain dog friendly let’s do right by our dogs, our community and our beloved cafes and teach our dogs some manners and expectations around being at a cafe.

Also, make sure you balance out the “doing nothing” with “doing something”. A combination of short training sessions, sniffy walks, structured walks where you’re incorporating play, leash manners, some obedience skills and recalls and most importantly, have fun with them to ensure your dog is living their best life.

Why am I using an AI image of Maple on a skateboard?

Well, because apparently we didn’t know we wanted to learn this skill until today. 😂

I had an interesting conversation with some skater kids (well, teenagers) at Marie Wallace Park (aka the train park) in Bayswater.

Side note: I LOVE this park for training. There’s so much going on, plenty of distractions and, when needed, you can find more space. It was so busy today, despite being lunchtime on a Wednesday.

It was actually the first time I noticed Maple showing some stress around skateboards and scooters. She’s seen them before, but today they were zooming past her a little too close for comfort.

When a couple of the kids stopped for a break, I took the opportunity to ask if Maple could investigate a skateboard to get some better exposure around it.

She showed some lovely curiosity and I allowed her to sayvhello to the kids. They actually thanked me for training her around skateboards.

That surprised me.

They told me they often have trouble skating in public places because they have so many negative experiences around dogs. That’s not cool.

This is exactly why exposure to novelty is so important for puppies as well as teaching your dogs how to walk loosely on lead and recall off lead no matter the distraction.

It’s not about interacting with everything. It’s about teaching neutrality.

I don’t want Maple freaking out every time she sees a skateboard, scooter or bike. But I also don’t want her so excited by them that she accidentally knocks over a kid or tries to grab something moving past her.

Dogs naturally have prey drive. That’s normal.

What isn’t ideal is a dog with no impulse control who thinks chasing a ball and chasing a kid on a skateboard are equally appropriate activities.

On the flip side, skateboarders you can also help out dogs too by slowing down when approaching them and give them some space if you notice barking, lunging or intense staring.

I know, I know, I harp on about keeping your dogs separate when you bring home a new pup but there’s a reason why.

Puppies can be obnoxious little turds and they don’t always know when enough is enough. If I left it up to Maple she would bully Bob into play every time but it’s not play with consent. Whilst she has puppy privileges at the moment (most adult dogs tolerate puppies up to certain point), she’s about to hit adolescence and if I allowed her to harass Bob all the time this might end up in a real fight, that neither Bob, Maple or I want, well maybe Maple (conflict seeking little ratbag that she is).

This would create more management for me in the long run, I definitely don’t want my dogs practicing fighting and I don’t want the feeling uncomfortable or on edge in their own home, that’s sh*tty state of mind to be in. It doesn’t matter the breed, this can happen in any home with any breeds of dogs if their humans aren’t advocating for them and giving them space they need.

While she’s young it’s so important that the interactions she has with other dogs are positive and with neutral, stable adult dogs that communicate well. I don’t want a dog that is scared of every dog she meets, I also don’t want a dog that wants to grab and tackle every dog she meets either…just because she’s friendly doesn’t mean she gets to be rude or pushy.

I don’t allow her to meet every dog we see when we’re out and about, but she has great interactions with the dogs she knows, quality over quantity.

Bob is also learning as well as he’s a little socially awkward but with my help he’s now learning ways to guide her into playing a game that they both enjoy.

Some of you may remember Curtis, the bloodhound x I fostered nearly a year ago for The Rescue Club fam. In our suburban home he struggled a little, was a bit of an escapologist no matter how we tried to contain him but now he lives on a property in Mansfield and gets to truely be himself.

I regularly receive updates from his new humans and it makes me smile every time. He could not have gone to a better home, he gets to be a workshop dog, express his big bloodhound feelings with all the drama and attitude that comes along with it and is with a family that researched and understood the breed they got.

They absolutely adore this boy and have provided him with the best home. This is what love looks like 🥰
