β οΈπ¨ TICK PARALYSIS ALERT π¨β οΈ
From our staff to your families β PLEASE check your dogβs tick prevention! πΆβ€οΈ
We need to have a serious chat about paralysis ticks.
This year, we have seen an unbelievable number of paralysis tick cases, and what is particularly concerning is that we have been seeing them ALL YEAR, not just during the usual spring and summer months.
And now, as we head into spring, we are already seeing the number of cases increase. π
Please donβt wait until you find a tick on your dog. Prevention is key.
π¨ KNOW THE SIGNS π¨
Paralysis tick symptoms can include:
β οΈ Unsteadiness or weakness in the hind legs
(This can progress to complete paralysis if left untreated.)
β οΈ Gagging, coughing or excessive salivation
β οΈ Changes in your dogβs voice or bark
β οΈ Difficulty breathing
β οΈ Lethargy or weakness
Symptoms can develop 2β7 days after a tick attaches, and tick paralysis can become life-threatening very quickly.
If your dog shows ANY of these signs, seek veterinary attention immediately. π¨
π DAILY TICK CHECKS ARE SO IMPORTANT
Even dogs receiving tick prevention should be checked daily.
Run your hands over your dog from nose to tail, paying particular attention to areas such as the head, neck, ears, between the toes and around the collar.
From all of us here at Bomaderry Veterinary Hospital, we cannot stress this enough, please ensure your pets are on prevention! We have seen far too many tick cases this year already.
Please check your dogβs prevention today. If youβre unsure when their next dose is due, give us a call and we can check their prevention history, help set up reminders or discuss the options available for your pet.
