Our Bomaderry Veterinary Hospital team will be closing the clinic on Wednesday, 2nd September. ❤️

This is a difficult time for our team, and we appreciate your understanding as we take the day to support one another and be there together.

Missing teeth aren't always truly missing. Some teeth never erupt and remain trapped below the gum, where they can form damaging dentigerous cysts. 🔍

Others are lost to advanced periodontal disease, or break off, leaving painful retained roots hidden beneath the gumline. ⚠️

The only way to know for certain is with dental X-rays under anaesthesia. 🩻 If your dog has unexplained gaps, mention it at their next check-up so we can investigate.

Today is all about celebrating the goofy, loyal, loving, occasionally chaotic little souls who make our lives (and our clinic!) so much better. 🥹🐶

From tiny paws and wagging tails to big personalities in very small bodies… we LOVE watching your puppies grow into the wonderful dogs they become. ❤️

⚠️🚨 TICK PARALYSIS ALERT 🚨⚠️

From our staff to your families — PLEASE check your dog’s tick prevention! 🐶❤️

We need to have a serious chat about paralysis ticks.

This year, we have seen an unbelievable number of paralysis tick cases, and what is particularly concerning is that we have been seeing them ALL YEAR, not just during the usual spring and summer months.

And now, as we head into spring, we are already seeing the number of cases increase. 😟

Please don’t wait until you find a tick on your dog. Prevention is key.

🚨 KNOW THE SIGNS 🚨

Paralysis tick symptoms can include:

⚠️ Unsteadiness or weakness in the hind legs
(This can progress to complete paralysis if left untreated.)

⚠️ Gagging, coughing or excessive salivation

⚠️ Changes in your dog’s voice or bark

⚠️ Difficulty breathing

⚠️ Lethargy or weakness

Symptoms can develop 2–7 days after a tick attaches, and tick paralysis can become life-threatening very quickly.

If your dog shows ANY of these signs, seek veterinary attention immediately. 🚨

🔎 DAILY TICK CHECKS ARE SO IMPORTANT

Even dogs receiving tick prevention should be checked daily.

Run your hands over your dog from nose to tail, paying particular attention to areas such as the head, neck, ears, between the toes and around the collar.

Dogs adapt remarkably well after extractions, and many owners tell us their dog eats better than before, simply because they're no longer in pain. 🐶

Your dog may need softened food while their mouth heals, but most return to a normal diet, including kibble, within a couple of weeks. Even dogs with full-mouth extractions manage happily. 🍽️

A comfortable mouth with fewer teeth is far better than a painful mouth full of them. 💙

🐐💕 Three little visitors! 💕🐐

These three adorable baby goats popped in today for a quick procedure to be debudded to prevent their horns from developing as they grow. 🥰

Debudding is an important procedure for young goats as it can help:
🐐 Reduce the risk of injuries to other goats and people
🐐 Prevent goats from getting their horns caught in fencing and feeders
🐐 Make handling and veterinary care safer
🐐 Reduce fighting-related injuries within the herd
🐐 Make management easier as they grow into adults

When performed at the appropriate young age, the procedure is much simpler than dealing with fully developed horns later on.

These little ones were certainly more interested in cuddles than their procedure! 💕🐐🐐🐐

In Memoriam: Natalie Harris

It is with deep sadness that we share the news of the sudden and unexpected passing of our beloved Office Manager, Natalie Harris, on Saturday 15th August.

Natalie was a vital part of the Bomaderry Veterinary Hospital family since 2010. As both a highly capable veterinary nurse and a dedicated office manager, she brought warmth, energy, and a bright smile to the clinic every single day. She had a rare gift for making difficult days easier for her colleagues and clients alike.

Many of you have known Natalie for years and have experienced her welcoming personality firsthand. We will all miss her terribly, and we know our community shares in this profound loss. As our team navigates the grief of losing a leader and a close friend, we appreciate your patience and support.

Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with her partner, Rob, and her children, Megan and Ryan.

Dental disease doesn't wait. ⏳ Much of the damage happens below the gumline where you can't see it, progressing from reversible gingivitis to painful, irreversible periodontal disease. 🦷

Delaying a recommended scale and polish often means more extractions, longer anaesthetics, and higher costs down the track. Modern anaesthesia is very safe, even for senior pets.

If we've recommended a dental for your pet, sooner is always better than later. 🩺

Raw chicken wings are often recommended for keeping pets' teeth clean, but they carry real risks. ⚠️ Raw chicken can harbour bacteria such as Salmonella, and in Australia it has been linked to acute polyradiculoneuritis (APN), a serious paralysis condition in dogs.

Bones can also fracture teeth, cause choking, or injure the gut. 🦴 The dental benefit rarely outweighs these dangers.

Ask us about proven, safer alternatives like veterinary dental diets and chews. 🦷
