Bringing home a new puppy is exciting, adorable… and sometimes a little bit chaotic. 🐶

There’ll be cuddles and firsts, but also toilet accidents, chewing, puppy teeth, interrupted sleep and moments when you wonder whether your puppy has an off switch.

They’re not being naughty. They’re learning how to live in your world.

Puppy Academy is designed to help you give your puppy a great start, building confidence, practical life skills and a love of learning through kind, positive, games-based training.

Because puppy training isn’t just about what your puppy can do. It’s about helping them develop the skills they’ll need for life. 💙

Your puppy is allowed to say, “Not today.”

You might have planned the outing. Driven twenty minutes to get there. Packed the treats. Found a park. Possibly even remembered the poo bags.

Your puppy doesn’t care.

They haven’t read your socialisation checklist and they definitely don’t know this was supposed to be a Very Important Learning Experience.

If your puppy isn’t comfortable greeting someone, approaching something new, being handled or getting closer to whatever you had planned, you don’t have to convince them.

You can give them more space.

You can let them watch.

You can change the plan.

You can go home.

Protecting your puppy’s optimism sometimes means deciding that today isn’t the day.

There will be other opportunities.

What I want puppies learning is that when something feels a little too much, their human listens.

That’s a pretty useful lesson for a lifetime together.

TRAINING TIP

Your puppy doesn’t need to experience everything. They need good experiences with the things they do experience.

More experiences don’t automatically make a more confident puppy.

When we bring a puppy home, there can be enormous pressure to show them EVERYTHING.

People. Dogs. Cafés. Traffic. Shops. Kids. Buses. Umbrellas. The neighbour’s wheelie bin that is apparently deeply suspicious.

But protecting your puppy’s optimism isn’t about ticking as many experiences off a list as possible.

It’s about noticing how your puppy feels about them.

Give them time to look.

Let them approach when they’re ready.

Create distance when something feels a bit too big.

And don’t worry if today’s adventure is simply sitting somewhere new and watching the world go by.

We want puppies growing up thinking:

“New things? I can handle those.”

Not:

“Oh no. What are they going to make me deal with next?”

Protect the optimism. The skills can follow.
