Dogs don’t just learn from training sessions 🐾

They learn from safe social experiences too.

This is one of the reasons I love private dog parks for the right dogs and carefully chosen groups ✨

These dogs are:
🐾 Playing
🐾 Pausing and re-engaging
🐾 Practising social skills
🐾 Responding to recalls

And us humans get to catch up with friends too ☕🐶

I love watching dogs move naturally, communicate clearly, and make good choices in a safe environment.

Not every dog enjoys group play, and that’s OK too. The goal isn’t “more dogs”. It’s helping your dog feel safe, successful, and socially comfortable.

Recall training doesn’t have to mean setting aside extra time ⏰🐾

You can build a stronger recall during everyday walks.

Clem is only mildly distracted here, which makes this a great time to practise. I say his recall cue once, praise him as he’s coming back, and reinforce generously when he arrives 🍗✨

Little moments like this add up.

A few successful repetitions on walks can help build a recall your dog loves responding to 💜

One of the fastest ways to make dog training easier is to set things up so your dog can’t practise the behaviour you don’t want! 🐾✨

When Mabel started showing interest in our kitchen bin, I simply moved it into the laundry for a few weeks 👀🗑️

That meant she never got the chance to learn:
Bins are FUN and full of treasures!

Simple changes like:

🐾 Moving tempting items out of reach
🐾 Using gates or playpens

can save you so much stress, mess, and training later on.

Management isn’t “cheating” 💛 It’s one of the smartest ways to prevent unwanted habits before they begin.

I’m looking forward to teaching Un-Chase! Workshops in Central Victoria next month.

There are still a few vacancies in Puppy Un-Chase! and just one spot left in Walk This Way.

I’m really looking forward to welcoming Alexis Davison (founder of UnChase) back to Central Victoria for a workshop weekend in May. It’s shaping up to be a really nice mix of dogs and people, and most sessions are now sold out.

There’s just one spot left in Walk This Way, and a few spaces still available in our Un-Chase! Puppy session.

If you’ve got a puppy or young dog (under 8 months), this session is all about getting ahead. It’s suitable for dogs already showing a lot of interest in movement such as cars, bikes, roos, livestock or birds, and for anyone who wants to set things up early and avoid a lot of headaches later on.

The workshops are held on a beautiful private bush property in Fryerstown, with small groups, plenty of space and lots of support. Everything is practical and designed to carry over into real life, and you’ll also get bonus materials to keep building things at home afterwards.

Most people think good dog play is about what’s happening…
but really it’s in the pauses 🐾

Watch closely and you’ll see it.
Mabel is playing tug with one of Clem’s ears!
Clem sits up instead of escalating.
Mabel lets go, sits, and shakes off.
Arlo pauses too.

No tension. No overwhelm. Just dogs communicating clearly and keeping things safe ✨

This is what good play looks like.
Pauses and resets.

And it’s something we can teach 💜

Next time your dog is playing, notice any pause, even a second. Reinforce the pause. Quietly praise or even give a treat if it’s appropriate.
