Want a reliable recall? 🐕💨

My top recall training tip is simple: always reinforce your dog for coming when you call.

Remember, reinforcement doesn’t have to mean food! 🙌

Depending on your dog and what’s happening around them, the best reinforcer might be going back to playing, swimming, sniffing, greeting a friend, having a game with you, getting a good bum scratch, or enjoying something delicious. 🥩🐟

For my dogs, I often carry high-value cooked meat or fish when we’re out.

And I’ve just discovered these little silicone Snacket pouches that fit straight into my pocket. Perfect as we head into warmer weather and the training jacket gets left at home! ☀️

A reliable recall is built through lots of reinforcement, so make coming back to you worth it. 💛

Dog friendships can take time 🐾

Some dogs are ready to make friends immediately. Others need a little more time and space.

When puppy Clem met Shine, he stayed in his stroller so he couldn’t rush up to her. Shine could approach, investigate, and move away whenever she wanted.

We continued with sniffy walks, shared activities, and plenty of opportunities to simply enjoy being around each other. 🌿

When introducing dogs, the goal doesn’t have to be instant interaction or play. Giving dogs time, space, and choice can help a relationship develop at a pace that works for both of them.

Your dog’s breed can give you some good information about some possible traits, but it can’t tell you everything about your dog. 🐶💛

I’ve just got back from taking Duke (Australian Shepherd), and Mabel (Golden Retriever), to our local dog swimming pool. 💦

Duke had some good swims. Mabel was much happier watching from the edge!

It was a great reminder of something we often say in dog training:

🐾 Behaviour is the study of one.

Breed traits can give us clues about the activities, enrichment, and experiences a dog might enjoy. But every dog is an individual.

Give your dog opportunities to try different things. 🌿💦🐕

Let them explore, observe their body language, and discover what they actually enjoy.

And remember, age, experience, confidence, environment, and learning history can all play a part, too.

Mabel is only seven months old, while Duke is two. Maybe she’ll grow to love swimming. Maybe she won’t.

The important thing is that we don’t expect our dogs to enjoy something simply because of their breed.

Does your dog only come when they know you have food? 👀🐶

If your dog checks your hands or pockets before responding to their recall cue, they may have learned that seeing food predicts reinforcement.

No food in sight? Coming back might not seem worth it.

Try this recall training exercise 👇

🍗 Hide some high-value food in a container in your home, yard, or another suitable location.

🐕 Let your dog get busy doing something else.

📣 Call your dog when they’re not expecting it.

🙌 As they come towards you, praise them, then move together to the hidden food and reinforce generously.

Start somewhere easy, such as inside your home or in the yard, before gradually practising around more distractions.

Your dog learns that they don’t need to SEE food for coming when called to lead to something great. ⭐

It’s a simple way to build a stronger, more reliable recall while reducing food checking.
