A horse doesn't care about a last name.
It doesn't know about shipping empires or foundations or fortunes. It responds to balance, pressure, release, and trust.
That may be exactly why Athina Onassis fell in love with them.
Her story began long before the arena.
She was born on January 29, 1985, the only child of Christina Onassis and French businessman Thierry Roussel. She was named after her grandmother, Athina Livanos, the first wife of Aristotle Onassis, the shipping magnate whose name meant wealth, power and fame.
Then, in November 1988, her mother died suddenly in Argentina, near Buenos Aires. Christina was thirty seven. The official cause was a heart attack brought on by acute pulmonary edema, fluid filling the lungs.
Athina was three.
One day her mother was there. The next she wasn't.
The newspapers didn't wait. They reached for the easiest headline they could find.
"The richest girl in the world."
She was far too young to understand what those words meant.
Estimates of what she inherited vary widely, from hundreds of millions of dollars to more than a billion. Her father, Thierry Roussel, raised her in the village of Lussy-sur-Morges, in Switzerland, alongside her half siblings Erik, Sandrine and Johanna. He tried to give her something close to an ordinary childhood, with his wife Gaby at his side.
It could never be fully ordinary. Because of the fortune behind her name, she reportedly lived with bodyguards and security precautions from a young age.
She went to school in the village, and later prepared for her exams in Brussels. She finished her baccalauréat in 2003. That same year, on her eighteenth birthday, she took control of her inheritance.
But the thing she cared about wasn't the money.
It was riding.
She had been in the saddle since childhood, and over time it became something more serious. She competed in show jumping as a Greek rider, with an Athens riding club, and in 2001 she finished second at an event in Jerez.
In the ring, the name meant nothing.
Her money could buy a horse. It could not make the horse trust her. It could not perfect her balance. It could not make her fearless when a jump went wrong.
Those things had to be earned.
In December 2005, she married Brazilian show jumper Álvaro de Miranda Neto, known as Doda. Together they built their lives around the sport, and for a time the partnership worked both inside and outside the ring.
The Onassis name kept following her.
In 2006, she reportedly tried to lead the Onassis Foundation, and its board declined, saying she lacked the qualifications. Family disputes over money and control seemed to follow her for years.
Then, in November 2012, she was badly hurt. A fall from her horse left her with a spinal injury.
She came back anyway.
By 2013 she was riding for Greece at the European Championships. A year later, she was at the World Championships.
Around that time, in 2013, she also sold Skorpios, the Greek island her grandfather Aristotle Onassis had once owned, for a reported 153 million dollars.
Her marriage was less lucky. They separated in 2016, and their divorce was settled in November 2017, after a contested process that included disputes over a prenuptial agreement and jointly owned horses.
Through all of it, she stepped further out of view.
Fewer interviews. Fewer public appearances. Fewer chances for a camera to follow her.
She now lives in Belgium and is rarely seen in public. In 2018, outlets including the New York Times and the Associated Press reported that she had joined the ranks of the world's billionaires, though the true size of her fortune has never been confirmed.
In 2025, she reportedly joined the board of the French retailer Groupe Casino as an investor.
The photographs became rare because she gave photographers less of her life to photograph.
She was born into one of the most famous fortunes of the twentieth century, but she did not choose the name. She did not choose the inheritance. She did not choose the mythology that came with it.
What she could choose was where to put her life.
A child who lost her mother before she could understand loss.
A girl who grew up inside a legend she never asked for.
A woman who found something that belonged only to her.
Not the fortune. Not the foundation. Not the headlines.
The horses. The work. The discipline. The quiet life she built beyond the reach of the cameras.
The newspapers wanted an heiress.
She became a rider.
Because sometimes the greatest inheritance isn't what you're given.
It's what you decide to become.
