What should you look for when buying a horse if you never want to worry about finding it a new home?

It starts long before you get on and ride it.

Temperament. A good mind will always be valuable. Trainability, willingness and character can take a horse a long way.

Type. Buy a horse that suits the market. Correct conformation, athleticism and rideability give you more options later.

Pedigree. Good breeding doesn’t guarantee a great horse, but more often than not, quality breeding gives you a better chance of producing something desirable and valuable.

Education. A horse with a solid education, good basics and experience is far easier to place than one with holes in its training.

And most importantly—be honest about what you are buying.

The easiest horse to sell in the future is the horse that was a good decision in the first place.

Buy with the future in mind, not just the next weekend.

Tarama Atticus is a quality 16.3hh Warmblood gelding, 11 years old, offered for sale due to no fault of his own. He is by Romley Antonero and out of Flowervale Metallica.

Currently in professional training and competing, Atticus has been successfully eventing with his current lady rider, placing in numerous 80–95cm eventing competitions throughout 2024 and 2025. He is confidently jumping 1.10–1.20m in competition and schooling up to 1.30m at home.

Atticus is an exceptionally brave, honest and careful jumper who genuinely enjoys his job. He has a natural rhythm to a fence, is scopey and athletic, and gives his rider a fantastic feeling over jumps. He confidently takes on challenges and provides his rider with plenty of confidence.

While he has successfully competed in eventing, Atticus is best suited to a showjumping home where his scope, ability and love of jumping can be further developed. He would suit an ambitious amateur looking for a quality horse with the experience and ability to continue progressing through the grades.

Best suited to a confident rider and not a beginner home.

Pedigree Matters

Pedigree makes the horse more often than not.

The nicest horses usually have the nicest pedigrees — and that’s not by accident. Quality bloodlines give you a better chance of getting the athleticism, rideability, temperament and longevity that we all want.

Of course, pedigree alone doesn’t make a great horse. Training, management and the individual horse still matter.

But when you’re looking at a young horse with the right breeding, you’re not just buying what you see today — you’re buying into generations of quality behind it.

There’s a funny truth in showjumping: the sweetest, easiest horses often end up with the riders who need the most help, while the difficult, complicated ones somehow find riders who learn to become exceptional.

Sometimes the tricky horse doesn’t need a better horseman — it creates one. Every problem forces you to learn, adapt, communicate and become better.

The horse that tests you the most can often teach you the most.

A showjumping rider needs a strong heart—both physically and mentally
🧠 Courage: Riders need courage because they are approaching large obstacles at speed while trusting the horse.

🎯 Focus under pressure: A strong mindset helps the rider stay calm, make quick decisions, and follow the course accurately.

🤝 Trust: The rider needs confidence in their horse and in their own training, especially when approaching a difficult jump.

💪 Resilience: Mistakes, refusals, falls, and competitions can be challenging. A good rider learns from setbacks and gets back up.

So, in showjumping, “having heart” means courage, determination, trust, and the ability to stay calm under pressure.

Why selling your problem horse can make the problem bigger

Selling a problem horse doesn’t always make the problem disappear — sometimes it just moves the problem to someone else.

If you haven’t understood why the horse is struggling, the next rider may repeat the same mistakes, the horse may become more difficult, and eventually the problem can become much bigger than it was originally.

Sometimes the best thing you can do is stop, get the right help, and work out whether the horse needs more time, a different approach, or simply a different job.

Not every problem horse needs to be sold. Sometimes it needs to be understood.
