Something a lot of cat owners don’t realise β€” cats can get heartworm too. 🐱

It’s less common than in dogs, but it’s harder to detect, which makes prevention even more important. And here’s the thing β€” it doesn’t matter whether your cat is indoor or outdoor. An infected mosquito can get inside, which means indoor cats can be exposed too.

Heartworm is spread only by mosquito bite β€” no pet-to-pet transmission at all. With mosquito season picking up, now is a good time to make sure your cat is covered.

As a clinic we have seen locally acquired heartworm cases here in Perth β€” usually in pets whose prevention has lapsed.

Here’s a quick breakdown of our current cat options:

🐱 Revolution Plus β€” monthly application, covers fleas, paralysis ticks, heartworm, roundworm, hookworm, ear mites and biting lice. No tapeworm cover.

🐱 Felpreva β€” new this month, three-monthly application, covers fleas, paralysis ticks, ear mites, roundworm, hookworm, lungworm and tapeworm. The only one of our cat products with tapeworm cover included.

Not sure which one is right for your cat? Ask the team β€” we’re happy to help.

Here's why we recently switched to recommending Simparica Trio and Cazitel together for dogs β€” and why we think it's the most complete cover available. 🐾

Simparica Trio covers fleas, ticks, heartworm, roundworm, hookworm, mange and ear mites. But it doesn't reach whipworm or non-flea tapeworms.

That's where Cazitel comes in β€” covering roundworm, hookworm, whipworm, tapeworm (including hydatid), and Giardia shedding.

Together, they cover the full picture.

πŸŽƒ October only β€” get a free Cazitel Allwormer with any Simparica Trio purchase. Ask the team for details.

Here's something that surprises a lot of pet owners β€” your dog or cat can be carrying intestinal worms with no obvious signs at all. 🐾

The main ones we see in Australian pets:
πŸ”Έ Roundworm β€” very common, especially in puppies and kittens
πŸ”Έ Hookworm β€” picked up from contaminated soil
πŸ”Έ Whipworm β€” dogs only, stubborn and often silent
πŸ”Έ Tapeworm β€” often comes from fleas (another reason to keep flea prevention current)

Signs to watch for: poor coat condition, slow growth, pot-bellied look in young animals, visible worms or segments, vomiting or diarrhoea. But many pets show none of these β€” routine worming is the only real protection.

And yes β€” a couple of types can occasionally be picked up by people, especially kids playing in the yard. Routine worming and basic yard hygiene go a long way.

Heartworm doesn't spread pet to pet β€” it only takes one mosquito bite. 🦟

It's rare, but we do still see it here in Perth β€” usually in pets whose prevention has lapsed. If you're not sure when your dog was last covered, that's a great reason to give us a call.

Prevention is simple. A monthly tablet or chew, or the annual Proheart injection we offer here at Bicton Vet β€” one appointment, covered for the year.

Been on a road trip east with your dog this spring? Here's something worth knowing when you get home. 🐾

The paralysis tick isn't established in WA β€” but if your dog travelled to QLD or NSW, a tick can travel home attached to them. And signs of paralysis can appear only after you're already back.

Signs to watch for (ascending paralysis):
β€’ A change in bark or meow
β€’ Wobbly back legs β€” progressing forward
β€’ Vomiting, difficulty breathing, drooling
β€’ Loss of appetite or lethargy

Ticks are most often found on the head, neck and ears β€” so that's the first place to check. Run your hands over your dog's whole coat daily for several weeks after returning from a tick-prone area.

Once signs start, deterioration can happen quickly. Always treat this as an emergency β€” call us immediately.

If you've been googling "ticks in WA" and finding conflicting information β€” here's the one that actually matters for our local dogs. 🐾

The brown dog tick is established across northern WA β€” the Kimberley, Pilbara, and Gascoyne. It carries Ehrlichia canis, a serious tick-borne disease that can develop quickly after a tick attaches.

Signs to watch for: fever, lethargy, enlarged lymph nodes, reduced appetite, and in some cases, bleeding disorders.

If you're heading north with your dog this spring or summer:
βœ” Make sure tick prevention is current before you leave
βœ” Check for ticks daily during your trip β€” especially around the head, neck and ears
βœ” Watch for symptoms for several weeks after you return
βœ” Call us immediately if anything seems off

Not sure what prevention is right for travel? We can help before you go.

This little man was found in Blackwall Reach this morning and has been brought in to us. If he is yours or if you know who owns him, he really would like to go home.
