New research from Voyageurs Wolf Project says wolves may help blueberries spread and sprout more successfully in northern Minnesota.

In a research summary published Tuesday, the authors said blueberry seeds eaten and passed by wolves germinated faster and more often than seeds taken straight from wild blueberries.

The study is the first to examine how wolves affect the growth of seeds they consume. By growing seeds from wolf s**t and wild blueberries, researchers said wolf-digested seeds germinated 22-27% faster than seeds that had not passed through a wolf.

Being innovative might not always pay off. In a new study, researchers used house mice to test whether variation in the ecological environment is linked to innovation early in life; and whether innovation predicts fitness in ecologically relevant conditions. They found that individuals raised on high-quality environments are more likely to be innovative than those raised on comparatively lower quality ones, yet being innovative does not predict fitness later in life. Instead, how fast individuals innovate shapes survival in opposite ways across environments: fast innovators live longer in high-quality conditions, whereas slower, more cautious individuals survive longer in comparatively worse conditions. This dichotomy shows that the fitness value of innovation might more strongly depend on how innovation speed matches environmental quality in species that experience fluctuations in resource quality but not abundance.
