Prevention is Better Than Cure

❤️ The best gift you can give your older horse is early detection.

Many senior horses continue to live active, comfortable lives well into their twenties and even thirties with appropriate veterinary care.

Routine dentistry, screening for PPID and assessing the health of the incisor teeth can help identify problems before they become painful or difficult to manage.

If your horse is 15 years or older, now is the perfect time to organise their annual health check.

Why Do We Recommend Incisor Radiographs?

🦷 Your horse's front teeth may be hiding a painful problem.

One condition we commonly see in older horses is Equine Odontoclastic Tooth Resorption and Hypercementosis (EOTRH).

Affected horses may:
• Become reluctant to take the bit
• Quid hay or graze differently
• Resist having their mouth touched
• Develop swollen or painful incisors

The challenge is that many horses show very few outward signs until the disease is well advanced.

Incisor radiographs allow us to detect changes that simply can't be seen during a routine oral examination.

As part of our Senior Horse Health Check, horses aged 15 years and over receive 50% OFF incisor radiographs when their dental appointment is booked during August.

🐴 Does your older horse seem a little different?

PPID (Cushing's disease) is one of the most common hormonal conditions affecting older horses.

Some early signs include:
• Difficulty shedding their coat
• Loss of topline or muscle
• Increased drinking or urination
• Recurrent infections
• Reduced performance
• Laminitis

Many horses show only subtle changes in the early stages, which is why testing is so valuable.

An ACTH blood test is quick, simple and can help identify PPID before more serious problems develop.
