In honour of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Berry Vet Clinic is proud to be joining the Pink Up Berry initiative! 🌸

Our wonderful community is coming together throughout October to support the McGrath Foundation. Keep an eye out for pink window displays, decorated streets, local fundraising events and plenty of community spirit around town! 💗

This month, we’re doing our part to help raise funds for the McGrath Foundation, supporting the provision of McGrath Breast Care Nurses to families experiencing breast cancer.

🚨 Your pet doesn’t have to be paralysed to have tick paralysis.

It sounds a little strange given the name, but some of the early signs of tick paralysis can be surprisingly subtle.

Keep an eye (and ear 👂) out for:

• A change in their bark or meow
• Wobbliness or weakness, particularly in the back legs
• Vomiting, gagging or retching
• Difficulty swallowing
• Reluctance to walk, jump or move around normally
• Changes in their breathing
• Or simply seeming a little “not quite right”

Tick paralysis can progress quickly, which is why recognising those early changes is so important.

If you're worried something isn't right, please contact us. We'd much rather you call and talk it through than wait for more obvious signs to develop.

And while ticks are particularly active, keep up the prevention and those regular tick searches. 🐶🐱❤️

🚨 “But they’re on tick prevention…”
It’s something we sometimes hear when a pet arrives at the clinic with tick paralysis — and with lots of paralysis ticks around at the moment, it’s a good reminder to check that everyone’s protection is current.

📅 Quick question: when was your pet’s last tick treatment given?
If you had to check the calendar to answer that one, you’re probably not alone! 😅 Different products have different dosing schedules, so it’s worth making sure you know when the next one is due.

Tick prevention is highly effective when it’s used correctly and kept up to date, and there are now plenty of options to make that easier — including monthly and 3-monthly preventatives, as well as an annual tick prevention injection for dogs.

The best option is the one that suits your pet and is easy for you to keep on top of.

Even with prevention on board, regular tick searches are still important, particularly while tick activity is high.

🚨 TICK ALERT: Protect your pets! 🚨

We have had multiple cases in hospital already!!!

Paralysis ticks are out in full force, and they pose a serious threat to our furry family members. Once a tick attaches, it injects a dangerous neurotoxin that disrupts the connection between nerves and muscles, leading to progressive paralysis.

Watch for these warning signs:

🐾 Wobbly or weak hind legs

🐾 Reluctance to walk or jump

🐾 Changes in their bark or meow

🐾 Difficulty breathing

🐾 Vomiting or retching

What to do if you suspect a tick:

⚡ Seek immediate vet care and keep your pet as calm and cool as possible.

⚠️ Remove the tick carefully. If you're unsure how to do it safely, wait until you arrive at the clinic.

🔬 Save the tick in a container or zip-lock bag so we can identify it for you.

This includes a general anaesthetic, thorough examination, dental X-rays, and a professional scale and polish with us. How often your pet needs a dental procedure will depend on their individual dental health.
