😱What is it with Black Labs right now?😭

I’ve got a bunch, different ages, that all have similar cases. Negligible relationship with their family. Off tap attention seeking. Totally impulsive. No work ethic. Drivey.

Here is Jungle George, he’s even passed an Obedience Program! But like many such programs that focus on the skills, they don’t teach life skills. That’s not their focus!

We teach the same skill set but use it to shape a decision making process in our students. Allowing them to be able to make optimal choices in normal circumstances.

When Obedience is overdone we result in a dog who is totally reliant on your direction. They can’t make their own decisions because they have been taught to listen to you. But what happens for the rest of the day?

They run amok.

Jungle George has bad habits that we are working through, he pulls, barks, chases, fixates, chews and when I dropped him home…he barked at a picture.

He is a hard dog to train; he requires a very consistent approach, with an eye for detail.

Bodychecks are an integral part of our daily routine at Barefoot Paws. Ive been around dogs in 2 hemispheres and multiple countries. All high standard handlers are checking their athletes for niggles.

Injuries heal fairly quickly, but just like in humans, those niggling little aches and pains can add up.

Check the nails, the pads, the soft floppy skin between legs and body, the neck, ears and eyes. These are places where small injuries can occur. Then grow into big problems later when infection comes along.

🤡They belong in a circus! 🎪

After a super devastatingly eventful morning, which included a motorcycle accident and jumping in to organise traffic we finally made it to campus.

As you can see…the dogs are like “Who cares!”

Magic Mia is balancing on the back of a chair. Zion is searching for Mr Pickles (who graduated the Learnery last week). Nash is trying to get Sailor to slow down. Sailor is trying to go faster to get away from Nash. Goose is wrestling with Nahni. Nahni is pouncing on Goose. Ginnie is wondering what the heck is going on with Wilson. Wilson is chasing balls. Sonny is smashing into anything that moves.

And good ole Kodes is asleep through it all.

Strung out after the long weekend? These guys will help you over the hurdle 😝

Jungle George is making solid progress with his safe social skills! He can execute what is asked.
As yet, there is little to no 2-way relationship. You can see in the walking close up that he pays me enough attention to get the job done. But he’s not committed.

During training today he decided that enough is enough. He will now do everything his way. But that approach met with a brick wall: he wasn’t allowed to slack off and regress. In the video you will see that his tail was held vertically down. Now he MUST pay attention on a single task and that requires a HUGE amount of concentration. An amount he’s never had to deliver before.

Silly Goose made friends with Bonnie BonBon…I think…despite having 4 Aussie Shepherds in school today, shes focusing more on the Staffies 😝

Silly Syd, Dashing Darcy and the Nelliephant enjoy rolling around, playing by brail and wrestling with each other.

The Alfredo is pumped with the Nelliephant today…another crush for the boy 💘

Kairos is kruising around the yard keeping tabs on everyone’s activities. Reporting back to me periodically before doing another dutiful lap 👮🏼‍♂️

Playa Freya is a little befuddled by the class mix and Jungle Georgie’s high pitched attention seeking. Until Buzzy Bee and Genius Ginnie start running after balls…then it’s anyone’s game.

Kids the Yodler is exhausted after a long weekend of snoozing and boozing. Shes happy to chill and pace herself 😝

I have yet to see anyone who brings a dog home to assert their shallow ego! But there’s plenty of trainer folk who have shallow egos.

Relationships are made at Daycare

In this video we will see some of the relationships that are nurtured at the Brainery.

Mad Milo is on holidays so Louie Longhair made moves on Nahni Banani. I don’t think he was totally prepped for her antics…but he got there.

Sonny Boy is laser focused on Genius Ginnie, but to her he is just another annoying boy with boy germs. This is something I need to watch; Sonny can be overbearing and Ginnie shouldn’t feel like she needs to escalate.

Mr Pickles is nervous around school. He’s not sure how to make friends, he’s our little cute odd bod. But Freeon Zion loves him, if only he wherent such a giant!

Dirtbag Molly has found that she can hustle with Ginnie for the ball. Through her speed she can compete and build a relationship with Ginnie. But, I have to watch that as Ginnie is very possessive about balls. Molly shouldn’t feel defenseless or the need to escalate.

Bonnie loves hype the class up during play, it she’d moment to shine. She sits outside the politics of class social structure. This makes it tricky to referee at times.

Magic Mia is always pseudo grooming Kodes. This has settled over time, but appears to be more relationship building than appeasing.

Welcome to Maniac Monday!

🥰All the Foolies showed off their best side 😎

🏝️Jungle George switched to the Learnery. So he can learn to chill. Now we have last weeks monster under control. 🥴

🎾Today George and I built a working relationship with each other.

🍪 I discovered that while he likes the ball. Food is a bigger option.

✈️ The runway was a big hit and he could really explode.

🛌 Place was very hard sa the tramp bed was pretty scary. But we got past his nonsense and got to his brain.

🥱What a massive day!!!
